Brain fade. CS3/ACR experts?

I fell over a web page tutorial about ACR. It talks about a set of tabs I don't have (graduated filter for example) at the top of the screen.

I checked and I am running ACR 4.6. I convert E510 E620 E600 ORF to DNG and then poke them in ACR (is that enough TLAs??)

Q1: So, why am I running ACR 4.6 which doesn't have these tabs? Is it because I can't use anything newer with CS3?

Q2: Anyone out there that has used CS3/CS4/CS5? Are the newer versions all bloatware and slow, willI regret changing up from CS3?

Pete

Yes

I think it goes

CS3 = ACR4
CS4 = ACR5
CS5 = ACR6

Pete
I played with the CS4 and CS5 downloads and the speed seemed about the same and the UI wasn't any improved ( which is silly when lightroom gives a better UI to the same code)

For RAW .. Apart from noise control having improved I didn't see enough to make me buy either upgrade. For PS, the clone tool improved in CS4 and the content aware fill definitely does a better job in the heal brush, but in both 95% of the new functionality was aimed at graphic designers IMO so no real difference in what I would use

re graduated filters.. I use this techniue now always. I junked all my ND Grad filters because I think I get much better results doing it in software which I know will be heresy to some, but I think it ... so it MUST be right
http://www.photoradar.com/techniques...s-in-photoshop it can take as little as about 15 seconds to ND Grad a picture

Regards
Andy

Re: Brain fade. CS3/ACR experts?

Thanks Andy,

Aha, that's pretty much how I figured it. I think I will stick with CS3 for the moment, even though the associated ACR is well out of date.

I have tweaked CS3 and got to know the menus quite well so I am wary of trading up to something that is more complex or slower and will certainly be more expensive

Re: Brain fade. CS3/ACR experts?

There is one reason to move on

Adobe push updates to camera models only into the latest version. if you want a newer camera than is supported it will never go into ACR 4 you would need to upgrade or use the DNG converter

It's the one thing I would upgrade for, but I find I do more RAW development on the E500/510 images than those from the E-30 which I just use OOC or with minor tweaks as JPEGS as I find them so good

Andy

Re: Brain fade. CS3/ACR experts?

I have been using CS4 since it came out. Before that I was on CS then CS2. I am now using CS5 extended. I would recommend upgrading to CS5 you will be amazed at what you can do. The noise reduction filter alone in ACR is worth upgrading for.

this is one of the reasons that A stick with the underlying UI of CS - CS5 will look and feel like CS3 almost out the box; and then you start to notice extra things
