Request Olympus support

Since there is no indication of Olympus providing a solution that goes beyond their very limited presets in the cameras, this here looks like a darned good solution... but it NEEDS every Oly user who reads this, to request support for E-system cameras:

http://www.ononesoftware.com/blog/20...pp-from-onone/

http://www.ononesoftware.com/detail.php?prodLine_id=38

http://www.ononesoftware.com/detail.php?prodLine_id=38

http://techblips.dailyradar.com/stor...pp_from_onone/

The top link is available for posting requests for different models.
Please take a minute and post there. It would enable several steps of EV shooting, WITHOUT touching the camera and mess up the photo (if on a tripod). Plus all the other benefits.

Olympus is NOT going to make anything like this possible... so it is up to us to encourage others to make it.

Have a look at those 2 videos, that show what can be done, even when it can "not" be done officially:

I have written emails to both companies, and posted a user comment in the iPod software list... I hope the rest of you good folks will do the same.

Re: Request Olympus support

Are you looking for the iPhone bit or would you be happy without it.

I've been playing about with the Oly developer kit and could probably knock up something that would take x pictures at different settings fairly easily (tethered shooting). The remote firing from an iPhone is not something I could do though.

Is this something that others would be interested in?

Re: Request Olympus support

I got a reply from Promote Systems:

Quote:
Hello Trausti,

We haven't tested it with Oly cameras yet, however there is a chance that it
would work. What camera model do you have? Does it support tethered shooting
if you connect it via USB to a PC? The latter is very important - if the
camera does not support that, Promote Control will likely not be compatible.

Can someone explain to me what "tethered shooting" really means? Haven't come across that word in English earlier.

Limited googling indicates that E-series cameras do support this, thus, the control should work... in principle.

Here another camera control software of interest for Oly users:

(PC only)

Unhappy Re: Request Olympus support

Tethered shooting means controlling the camera when it is connected to a PC. Olympus sell a development kit which allows sofware writers to control pretty much all the camera settings and then take pictures (either to the CF card or straight back to the PC).

Re: Request Olympus support

I responded and got the following reply:

Quote:
Hello Trausti,

Please kindly download the following software package that will help you
test if your camera would be compatible:

http://www.promotesystems.com/downlo...l/pctsetup.zip

If the test works, there is a high probability that Promote Control will
work too. Thanks!

Ran the test program on my E-520, only to get a failure:

... and have passed the result back to them. This is a failure, but not the kind that makes it impossible for their control to be customized for Olympus cameras, as far as I can tell.

If people here with other E-series cameras are willing and able to download/install the test program (very quick installation.. but only for PC's), it would probably be good for promote systems to know if all the E-series models react in the same way. Having this - and other tools - to manage the camera, would of course be beneficial for the community.

So please... those of you who can, and want to do this 2 mintues of testing, could you report back here with the results?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have any specific plans. I'm just a sad git who works in software development and still enjoys programming in my spare time.

However....

If enough people have a requirement for something I might be able to knock a program together to do it.

e.g. take x pictures varying the shutter speed by y for each picture.

Is that what people are looking for?

Certainly HDR capture tethered to a laptop/netbook
eg
number of shots
start shutter speed
increase by x.x stops per shot

might be a good one to start with

Re: Request Olympus support

Thank you Graham of Rainham, it is good to have more results available for them to work with. Now we have confirmation of 2 E-series cameras... there surely are more people here that can take out 2 minutes of their lives and conduct the test? The "down side" would possibly be a remote that could do all the things you can NOT do today with your camera. I don't see that as a bad thing.

Hoping for more results.

Thank you for your time.
