Question Export GPS log file from OIS?

I'm currently on safari and this morning I used the GPS logger on our game drive. It logged the whole drive fine, but I can't see how I can export that log file from the iOS app (using iPhone 5S). How do I get the log file out of the app? I can't import all the images taken to the phone as I don't have enough space, so the plan is to export the log file, convert that to .gpx and then apply the tags in Lightroom. What am I missing?

Re: Export GPS log file from OIS?

It's not as obvious as I thought, but the guide in OIS worked for me and I transferred the log to 4 pictures taken out the window.

I can't see me ever using it as I tend to "old school" notes

Enjoy the rest of the trip and look forward to seeing some pictures

Thanks Graham, we're having a great time.

Unfortunately I can't find anywhere in the app to export the log. It seems like you have to import your photos to your device and let the app tag them. Unfortunately I don't have an iPhone with enough storage to do that.

Re: Export GPS log file from OIS?

This only works if you have the times synchronised between camera and phone before you start. Connect using wifi- Menu -> Playback-> connevt t o smartphone. If you haven't previously connected it will walk you through and build a profile. on your phone go to wifi settings the phone will appear on the list, select it. Then go to OIS it will offer you the chance to update for location. When you do that it write the co-ordinates to the .ORF on the camera.
Hope that helps.
I have found no way to export a GPX file which is a pain if you haven't synched time and date.

Re: Export GPS log file from OIS?

So if I understand this correctly it isn't importing the images to iPhone but it uses the wifi connection to write to the files on the SD card in the camera? If so, I'm still screwed since I format the cards every time I download to Lightroom.

Correct.

Not so much

As well as writing the GPS Data to the SD Card, it also writes the data to the Exif of each image taken within the same time sync. It does it for both ORF & jpg files.

Still can't see me using it, but I'd like to know what you do with the location data.

If you have already downloaded probably. Graham in Lightroom you can use the map function. It can help with orphaned images when you can't remember exactly what you took position may give you a clue.

I guess I'm still a bit stuck in the past, with GPS. I do use Google Maps though

Re: Export GPS log file from OIS?

I haven't tried this yet but it looks like you can email a .log file from OIS. You can then use gpsvisualizer.com (spelling?) to convert to a .gpx file. Needs to be done on laptop not mobile.

Where do you find the option to email the .log file? This is what I need to do if I want to geotag the images in Lightroom.

Choose the track you have finished recording go to the little share symbol (box with up arrow). One of the options is Mail.

Re: Export GPS log file from OIS?

Thanks Maccabeej! I was trying to use the share button from within each log file itself and not having any luck, but selecting the tracks from the list and then sharing worked.

Re: Export GPS log file from OIS?

[Reviving this rather than starting a new thread on the same subject]

Can a user or two answer a couple of questions please?

I understand I need to connect to my camera (E-M10 Mki) using the OIshare app to synch the time.
Do I need to do this every time I want to use GPS logging or will the clocks stay reasonably in synch over a day, a week, a month?
How much of an impact does logging have on the phone battery?
Does the app use any data if you're not actively looking at the GPS log it's recording?
Can anyone explain the "Logging Notification" settings?
Currently I'm at the default of
"Notification Count" 2 times
"Notification Interval" 2 hours

Sorry if this is obvious to you, I've never had a camera that used GPS but it might be handy for this summer's holiday which is a driving tour of France.

I'll have a play before we go, but perhaps you've already learnt how it works!

Re: Export GPS log file from OIS?

When OiS makes a connection with your camera it syncs the camera clock with the time on the device running the OiS app.
