Re: Flash Advice needed Value for Money

I've not heard of this brand before and the design doesn't look familiar. Its guide number at 85mm (42mm on Four Thirds) is only 42 metres compared to 50 metres with the Olympus FL-50. There is no R (wireless remote control) mode support, although it has a built in slave sensor. But it claims to support TTL mode, so it may be worth a go. I see that the advertiser is in the US, so you might have a 20% add-on for the import in terms of VAT.

Re: Flash Advice needed Value for Money

If you don't mind manual flashes the YongNuo ones are highly regarded. The 460-II normally the best bet - but the new 560 looks good too.
They are roughly equivalent to the FL-36 and FL-50, and have optical slaves for remote work (not TTL of course). There is plenty of info on these around if you are interested - as well as quite a few users here. However you will have to splash out a fair bit more for proper TTL. Have you thought about looking for a second hand FL-36 / FL-50 (the older non R versions)?

Re: Flash Advice needed Value for Money

Hi,

I have a FL-50 that I'm willing to sell. It has a few minor scratches and rubs, but is in perfect working order.

Let me know if you are interested.

The FL40 works with the E1 but I don't think it works TTL with later E series. I suggest you check before parting with any cash.

You could try these I use the Metz one which is good for a basic usage, both are around £85.

The FL-40 is from an earlier generation of cameras and is not really compatible with E-System cameras apart from the original E-1 and even then it can be a bit temperamental.

And to answer your earlier question the guide number for the FL-50 is.... 50 (metres).

The guide number is only 36 (the same as the FL-36) and it only tilts up and down, not sideways. And it doesn't look like the Metz has auto zooming.

I'd definitely go for an FL-50 if it's in your budget.

The main question is am i going to find a 2nd hand FL-50 for under £100? or a FL-36

I often buy and sell Olympus kit on ebay and track the prices of things I'm interested in and looking to sell. The following data is for 50 of the last FL-50s sold. The avarage is £175. The top price is for "AS NEW" and the lowest is for "Well Used"

My one has not had a lot of use, because I got a new FL-50R as a free offer with the E-3. I've just fully tested it and it's 100% functional and with a flash meter produces the same output as the FL-50Rs

It is just the flash-head that I have for sale, which is in "used" condition so I'd expect to get an avarage price for it.

SO: £175 including P&P Special Delivery

FL-50 205 185 188 176 205 154 175 160 159 181 158 180 172 175 152 152 164 195 178 158 170 154 227 190 169 244 164 231 192 182 185 201 155 191 180 184 196 143 180 125 150 155 146 136 146 136 175 200 165 170
