Travel photography?

Anywhere to discuss travel related photography? Thinking places, best time to visit, must-see’s etc?

Re: Travel photography?

Travelling itself means different things to us all, so my trips to London are always a huge photography opportunity...

I produced a very nice portrait of my grandson, while “travelling” on a train.

Years ago I “traveled” (not far) to an e-group meet-up to shoot sunrise.

The “Foto Fair” sub-Forum is a good place to start any topic for discussion...

Please post an image as an example of any type of “travel” photography that you want ideas or discussion about

Re: Travel photography?

Fair points! It’s less about actual pictures and more about the mechanics of travelling I guess. We’ve done several ‘once in a lifetime’ trips and have usually ended up returning there to either do it all over again or maybe just a variation on a theme. We’re rapidly running out of time and want to tick off some of our list but are looking for thoughts from people who have done similar things (Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago for example)
Wildlife is the main focus but not to the detriment of everything else, scenery works but so does a rusty old steam engine as does a friendly bar with a view.
Don’t use Trip Advisor beyond basic ideas so I guess it’s about ‘if going to A don’t bother with X but make sure you see Y’ sort of thing.

Re: Travel photography?

For Art and Architecture, Florence is hard to beat.

We flew into Pisa and got the train. It was so easy to find our way around and while a bit expensive, was incredibly interesting.

If you count “people” as wildlife, there’s a lot to take pictures of.

Italy is on a list, but we’re saving that for when we’re sick of long haul flights, been to Tuscany a few times, love the place. Familiar with Pisa and even the prostitutes around the airport (seen them, nothing more!). Love Siena, so yes, it’s to be revisited. Not been to Florence so maybe I’ll add it to the list. Never considered a train. Thanks for the suggestion.

Got friends who have been to Cuba, would love to go. Familiar with the Dominican Republic - been 3 times, albeit doing the same basic trip over and over. So thanks for your unspoken suggestion!

Re: Travel photography?

For Italy we went to Pompeii and Herculaneum recently it was fascinating. Venice is also very photogenic.

Re: Travel photography?

Can recommend Hawaii...…….Not too expensive to get there, but suspect hotels might sting a bit. We stay with rellies...…….

Hawaii is also on the list but unless we do it soon I can’t see it happening, it’s a hell of a trek so we were thinking maybe do Tonga (an even worse trek apparently!) and even NZ / Aus while we are at it, trouble is it’s at least a 3 week trip for all of that and all the time we care for my ancient mother it’s a no-no because of the time away. If it looks likely I’ll try to remember your recommendation and ask for tips on places and volcano views.

At least by flying west you get a longer weekend so potentially do-able!

Re: Travel photography?

Here, A travel to Bromo in Indonesia. Best between March to August. You can see my travel adventure to Bromo here.

It's not really that expensive as there are lots of budget airlines flying there. Just make sure you have all your travel arrangements done by a trusted agent/guide/transporter.

If you decide to self travel, do arrange to stay at the Lavaview Hotel as I find that spot to be good for milkyway just outside the main entrance.

Re: Travel photography?

Thanks for that. The off the cuff remark about the Milky Way is the sort of thing I’m after really.
We came close to booking Raja Ampat (sp?) last year, with a one man outfit we use (and trust) but decided against when we found out there was some strange limitations on where you could fly into and it not then being easy to get to where we needed to pick up a small boat for the trip, can’t remember the details but it was something like that. We usually sort our own arrangements, flights, accommodation etc and it works well for us, saying that we are looking at a small company for the Trinidad trip which does include flights.

Re: Travel photography?

Bromo according to the guide, is almost a dead place out of Milkyway season. That's why the remark on milkyway is there.
