I found FTU before I found this site and I rarely go on there now because I too find it difficult to navigate around. On here, for example, you can scroll down threads very quickly whereas on FTU you have to click on next and go through all the posts you've already seen, and there's no option (as far as I can see anyway) to "go to first unread post" as there is on here in the new posts section. I actually prefer to browse FTU without logging in as the layout seems more user friendly!!

Edit: Have just had a look at FTU. If I don't log in it behaves like this site does when I'm logged in!!

You can make the forum index page your home page in your browser, either as the main home page or using bookmarks.

The portal page that shows all threads with new posts also shows highlighted threads. I know some people prefer the forum index view, but there are just as many who prefer the default view as it is.

But it does look like we have identified what was being referred to in FTU.

OK, this is very interesting feedback and may be a configuration issue for the various user groups. I will have a look at this later today and if I spot any fundamental differences may make some changes to the FTU configuration. As previously mentioned, the two sites should really be operating in a fairly similar fashion, so differences being expressed here may mean I need to identify and fix things!

I do notice that not so many FTU members log in...

I've now found that on FTU I have an option (which I can't see on here) to change the display to linear mode and it now behaves properly!! Perhaps you simply need to change the FTU default to linear?

Edit: Have found that option on here too

Yes, OK - I have been thinking of doing this, actually. DPNow.com also defaults to the threaded view, which is more tricky to use. Will do that now...

That's probably why I don't go on there very often either!! I'll have to spend even more time at my PC now!

Re: Can I just say...

Now I'm confused - The FTU forum is set to linear mode by default already.

I'll do some more digging...

Re: Can I just say...

Yes Nick it is good to see. I have found lately I tend to read more than comment, but am glad to see a good mixture of new and established posters on this site. I to tend not to use the sister site much as I to find navigation different, maybe it is just the way I have it defaulted but the constant having to go and click to get the next post puts me of here you just have to read down.

Re: Can I just say...

The front page of 4thirds-user,com just seems al a bit cluttered to me. I freely admit I seldom visit it ( that's my fault ). I dislike sites where there is a mass of information just staring you in the face when you log in. I much prefer a simple front end screen with tabs that take you to what you may be looking for - a bit like here really.

Hope this helps in some way

Re: Can I just say...

I like this site's format with the home page giving the latest posts (in all categogies) & sometimes I forget to go to the Forum Index to check categories like Foto Fair to find the posts that have been pushed down the list before someone replies (because of the increasing posts). With FTU site, I don't mind the home page except it is made up of news that could be considered quite old but still relevant for some, especially new users of a 4/3's camera. I just click on Forum towards the top left to see a bigger list of recent posts (like the home page here & maybe I'll set that as my home page) but if I want to see the main home page, I have to go to the web address & delete the extensions to the main web address. I would suggest it would be better to have a home page tab like this site.

I have just noticed that Four Thirds User (at the top left) is the link to the home page & maybe that could be made clearer or whatever. I also first joined up in the FTU forum with a user name of Ross (but was already taken here) & then I discovered this site was dedicated to Olympus E cameras, which to me, was more applicable & this site ends up being visted a lot more than FTU.

I have always made sure the thread posts were set to linear & find that option easy to change if desired.

Ian, thanks for all your efforts to make these forum sites the best.

Re: Can I just say...

Ian, I've just noticed that you've added another board under Showing Your Photos & wondered if another one could be added with a title something like How to Upload Your Photos. I think it would be helpful if the current threads on that topic could be added there for an easy indexed place for newbies (& a few others ). Just a suggestion.

Re: Can I just say...

I'm not talking about this forum, I'm talking about the forum Barr1e mentions! There is nothing wrong the organisation of this forum, on the contrary!

I thought me quoting Barr1e made that clear

So to make sure eveyone understands, I find the forum http://www.fourthirds-user.com/ not well organised, which is why I don't really spend time there.

I've been in and out of FTU a few times now and each time I log in it's set to threaded mode and I have to change it to linear mode - but if I browse FTU without logging in I'm in linear mode. That's using Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. It also seems I'm not the only one who experiences this. Hope this gives you some pointers.

OK, I have realised what the problem is - the default thread display mode is, indeed, Linear, which seems to be the most popular mode. But the default on registration is the hated threaded mode and of course most people don't bother to change this.

The good news is that you can change this permanently in the User Control Panel when you are logged in. Go to User Options, and scroll down until you find the option for display mode and switch to Linear. There is also a 'hybrid' mode that combines both the threaded display and the listed posts of linear mode.

I'll issue a newsletter on the FTU site to let people know they don't have to use threaded mode any more and the default on registration has now been changed to linear. This will apply to the DPNow forum too later today.

Thanks for highlighting this everyone!

Ian
