Smile Re: First attempt with "Christmas Present"

Hi There,

Looks promising I like the last image, I was put off this lens as it was getting quite a few negative reviews from early users then to confuse the situation others were more than happy I did not want to take the risk, so thought I would wait.

As those negatives caused me to bypass this lens it still does not change my view of an ideal setup for Birds and Airshow work it would be this lens and the E M1 mkii, such a long reaching portable camera system makes it ideal.

I got some nice images using the E M1 and 40-150 f2.8 and TC just that setup for those avenue of photography the lack of reach could be an issue in my view.

Good luck with the new lens and if you get any birds do show them.

Re: First attempt with "Christmas Present"

It's a stunning lens I'm so pleased with the results I've managed to get with the EM-1 and GX8.

Re: First attempt with "Christmas Present"

Interesting comments, I've been wondering if I should swap my Oly 40-150 and x1.4TC for the Panasonic lens. The weight of the Oly lens means I don't use it very often and when I do specifically go out for telephoto shots then it's often not long enough. The loss of that f2.8 capability is a concern. But on the other hand I really don't like the nervous bokeh that I sometimes get from the Oly lens set up, maybe the Panasonic lens is less prone to this?

Hi Phill D

We have both of these lenses. I was finding at places like Slimbridge that I wanted a bit more reach than the 210mm (1.4 TC added onto 40-150mm) so invested in the 100-400mm. I have found it to be a capable lens that has given some very sharp images. The 40-150mm will focus far closer and I took a lot of dragonfly images with it this summer.

For me the Panasonic is similar in a way to the Olympus 75-300mm that takes a bit of time to get the best out of it.

I used the Olympus at Slimbridge as I wanted to be able to use the pro capture feature of the E-M1 mark II (I wish they had called this an E-M2!!). I did find I missed the extra reach of the Panasonic lens. And pro-capture wasn't ideal for the situation I'd forgo it for the extended range. I do hope that a firmware update might allow pro capture to work with the Panasonic in the future.

Also, I always had the TC fitted so only ever had f4 so haven't missed that aspect too much.

With the 12-100mm and the 100-400mm I have a good range in just two lenses.

Amanda

Re: First attempt with "Christmas Present"

It would be a great lens for those pesky little garden birds buts its a bit pricey, a bit specialised, and a bit heavy for general use so will have to wait whilst I get the best out of the 40-150+TC.
