Tests on my replacement EM-1

I thought I would record a few of the results from my testing of the replacement EM-1.

These shots are in Manual focus, manual exposure mode using my canon fd 200mm f2.8 under pretty grey skies

I haven't found out how to get focus peaking working with this lens yet so these were shot, hand-held with the magnification (fn1 button) set to 5X, hand-held

Test subject 1 is a pylon at around 800 metres from my house, the "full" shot is about 2/3rds of the original frame and the crop is down to around 800 pixels longest side

Test subject 2 is a sand-tower at about 400m from my house, "full" and crop are around the same dimensions as for 1

Strong purple fringing is apparent around the edges, mostly removed in LR5 but the detail and sharpness if not too bad considering the lighting.

The EM-1 handles this lens more easily then the EM-5, although I need to select a better fn button than fn1 for my magnification trigger

When the IS is activated in the magnified view it remains on eve after the shot has been taking, requiring the push of another button (doesn't seem to matter which) to cancel it

Re: Tests on my replacement EM-1

Mmm. That looks like one sharp lens.

Regarding the purple fringing, have you tried the snaartrick: In Photoshop or Elements, ask for Reduce Noise in the Filter menu, set strength to 1 or 0, and Reduce Colour Noise to max or 100%.

It seems to take out some of the purple fringing without mangling the rest of the image..

Re: Tests on my replacement EM-1

thanks Peter, that sounds like something I should try.

One thing I forgot to mention, that I hadn't picked up with the EM-1, when I put the MF lens on the body it automatically switched in MF on the SCP, a neat trick.

Wish the light would improve so it would be worth going to the quay to shoot a few birds

Re: Tests on my replacement EM-1

Once again I have to point out that there is no exif metadata in photos posted to the forum.

It is so useful for this information to be preserved and there really isn't much reason why it can't be preserved.

If anyone needs help in preserving exif data please let me know.

Ian

Re: Tests on my replacement EM-1

A couple more test shots, indoors with poor available light

A photo of a framed photo behind glass, hand-held

35-100mm Panasonic with EM-1 1/20th sec at f3.2 with 100mm, ISO800

Artificial flowers in the conservatory using the 75-300 hand-held

75-300 with EM-1, 1/125th sec at f5.7 with 156mm and ISO 400

IS is working well and focus acquisition is fast and accurate even in the poor light

Re: Tests on my replacement EM-1

Ian, the reason there is no exif data embedded is because most of my images are from my Blog, (http://imagesfromnature.foliopic.com/ ), I am putting in what I consider to be the key info (when I remember) please let me know what you feel is missing and I will include it

(I'm loathe to start putting my images up in my blog, in the gallery here and / or in Flikr because I really don't have the time)

You could do it the other way around and upload your photos here (only) - then you can post the images on your blog using the gallery's BB CODE.

Re: Tests on my replacement EM-1

I had a chance for a quick test shoot around Christchurch this morning, in dire conditions but I shot a few frames off in the Priory which confirmed that the IS is working pretty well (and no lock-ups so far )

This was shot with 1/8th sec using the Olympus 9-18 (hand-held)

Olympus E-M1Exposure0.125 sec (1/8)Aperturef/5.6Focal Length18 mmISO Speed100

Full EXIF here

Here is another, shot as I was leaving the Priory, which I liked as it showed a good range on low key tonality (I did try using hand-held HDR of the same shot but found it too grainy as a SOOC .jpg - this is processed via LR5.2 from the .orf file)
