Sounds interesting - 42 for a 62mm to go on the 12-40 PRO.

Yes, that would be convenient and not too expensive (42 for the 12-100).
Some variable ND filters give artefacts in some skies due to their use of crossed polarisers, so what might happen with these is interesting. Worth waiting for some reliable reviews before investing, I suggest.
