Long Exposure techniques

I want to start doing some long exposures in a more serious manner. I know about Livebulb and Livetime modes, but have never really used them other than as an occasional experiment. When I did, I thought it was a nice gimmick, but I didn't really feel in control of what was going on, know what the refresh settings should be, etc, then guessing from the live histogram when to stop. Which was a bit hit and miss, and may or may not have been "right".

OTOH, switching all the clever stuff off, just going to Bulb and working from exposure tables for your filter strength also seems a bit hit and miss ... the table recommends (say) 4mins, and I find that it actually needs 5-and-a-bit to get a decent histogram.

So has anyone tested both methods and found a 'winner'? Since these fancy modes are unique to Olympus, it seems a shame not to make use of them, but if results are better/more reliable "doing it by hand", then I would do that.

Basically looking to see if someone has already done all the work it would take to compare Livebulb and manual Bulb modes properly! Or is it all basically hit and miss anyway...?

Worth a look to help understand the modes.

Re: Long Exposure techniques

Thanks Beagle as someone who tried that out when I first got the camera but then promptly forgot how to do it, it was good refresher.

Looking forward to see what you shoot Margaret.

Re: Long Exposure techniques

Thanks Beagletorque for the links, will check them out.

This is the best of the first efforts ... one out of about 25 misses! Done manually, on a wing, a prayer and an exposure table for 16 stops that wasn't really doing the business. Things can only get easier, one hopes!
