Look closely. The "mist" is in fact fine seeds released by tapping the branches (for the photo opportunity) or when we first noticed by just brushing against them whilst walking past.

The 'seed' is pollen from the male flowers.

Very interesting. OM. It so happens that on my morning walks along the creek, there is the exact same species of conifer as yours.
Indeed last year I actually took a close up of the developing cones that at a glance was indistinguishable from yours.
But I never did notice the "mist" effect caused by the pollen. I most likely binned that image,
but if and when I pass by again I shall see if I can replicate it.

The image doesn't show the cones, just the male flowers. The cones are on a different part of the tree.
