Is this 2 meshes, one behind the other, creating an interference pattern?

I've seen something similar to this on an automatic door... confuses my eyes (and brain) when the door opens and shuts and the honeycomb pattern comes and goes

It's the product of an inventive architect to add visual impact to a walkway, the structure is approx 8' by 4' wide and repeated every 100 yards or so.
