Olympus M.ZUIKO 9-18mm f4.0-5.6

I was just wondering if anyone had this lens, and what their opinion of it is?
I have read mixed reviews, but would rather have some real world advice please, and some images if anyone has any!
Many thanks
Marcia

Re: Olympus M.ZUIKO 9-18mm f4.0-5.6

I like it. Nearly as wide as I want it. Small. I chose it for the 9mm end really.

I didn't like the price though. Maybe the new Body Cap Lens 9mm would have done!

Plenty of real world samples here.

Some 9mm shots.

Thank you Ian. And small is good for me. Those shots are impressive! Definitely food for thought there!

Re: Olympus M.ZUIKO 9-18mm f4.0-5.6

It's a nice lens. The biggest drawback for me is remembering to extend it when I want to use it. Although I think the regular 4/3 version may have better IQ. (I'd consider swapping mine for the 4/3 version if anyone's interested?)

Re: Olympus M.ZUIKO 9-18mm f4.0-5.6

It is the lens that is on my PEN by default. I tend to use the wider field of view lenses, with the 7-14 & 14-35 on the FT E-System bodies.

I think it is an excellent lens.

A few weeks ago, some of us got together in Greenwich and Ian very kindly let me have use of the new E-M1 and the 17mm f/1.8 lens.

I spent all day using just the 17mm f/1.8 lens, but after lunch did a quick, hand held comparison test of the E-M1 with the 9-18 & 17mm and my PEN with the 17 & 9-18 ( 9-18 set at 17mm)

PEN & 17mm

PEN & 9-18

E-M1 & 9-18

E-M1 & 17mm

For me it serves to show just how good the 9-18 is...

Thank you Graham. That's really interesting. Always good to see comparisons, and now I'm finding myself very tempted!

Re: Olympus M.ZUIKO 9-18mm f4.0-5.6

I'm sure the Olympus roadmap indicated a new "wide angle zoom" but no further details. I wonder how this would compare on price to the 9-18mm for those able to wait a year os so for the new lens?

I have the 9-18mm lens and have found it quite adequate for my needs.

Re: Olympus M.ZUIKO 9-18mm f4.0-5.6

I tried both the Oly m4/3 9-18mm & the apnny 7-14mm side by side foe a w/e & although the Panny wa a lot more expensive found it out shone the ply every time, hence I found the extra (bought abroad) & purchased the Panny & extremely happy.

A real good friend has the 4/3 7-14mm Oly which having recently tried it with the new MMF 3 adapter is a cracking lens even if a little large & would look for a good 2nd hand one of these now for my EM1 or the EM5

Re: Olympus M.ZUIKO 9-18mm f4.0-5.6

My experience of the two 7-14s suggest that the Oly is much better on an Oly body. The Panny is corrected on a Panasonic G body.

Re: Olympus M.ZUIKO 9-18mm f4.0-5.6

After thinking long and hard, and with all of your excellent advice, I decided to go ahead and buy this lens this morning.
Unfortunately the one I had seen at a really good price had been sold, so I will hold fire until I see another used one at a reasonable price.
Many thanks for your help everyone
Marcia

Yes, I agree the 7-14 is better, BUT:

- the 9-18 is considerably smaller and lighter
- the 9-18 takes filters
- the 9-18 doesn't suffer anywhere near as much from purple flare
- the 9-18 is quite a bit cheaper
- the IQ over most of the frame is very similar. It's only the extreme corners where there is a difference

I had both for a while but eventually concluded that the 9-18's IQ was good enough for me and then its other attributes won me over. It's a personal decision of course, and TBH, there are times I wish I still had the 7-14.

On researching this lens I came across this thread and have to say it whetted my appetite.

Interesting.
