South Australia Outback No4 - 6 photos

After travelling 600kms from home we reached our destination at Roxby Downs.
A purpose built town to service the Olympic Dam Underground Mine run by BHP Billiton, mining uranium oxide and precious metals.
The population of Roxby varies with the activity at the mine, but today has a population of 4,500 with 900 fly/drive in and out workers.

Standing in the main street you look left and see a modern town with all amenities.

Looking to the right you are very quickly reminded that you are in red desert country.

30 kms out of town is the Olympic Dam Mine. You can take above ground tours, but not underground.
Record shots these taken in the middle of the day.

Very difficult to get close to the mine - we travelled out some distance to get these shots.

The newly acquired 70-300 II let me get a bit closer.

We were intrigued by the oval at Olympic Dam - Aussies obviously love their sport so much that red sand is no deterrent! Note the blue bucket in the centre. Drinks perhaps?

An intriguing series with erudite commentary.

For the 'long shots' of the mine you chose your foregrounds well.

But puzzled as to why you didn't pull the plant closer with the 300mm. (exif 124mm)

Glad you are enjoying the series Mark.
I did have a couple of closer shots, but wasn't that happy with either.

Thanks for commenting Ian. I meant to say to Mark that we were over a kilometre away when I took the mine shots.

Glad you are still with me! All will be revealed soon - mind you, it could be an anti-climax!
