In the Club with the Pen

In the Folk club at Midhurst again, with the Pen on silent mode...

I fiddled with the Pen trying to get it to record this video stuff I hear so much about. All I managed to do was take a funny shaped shot.

But I did spot this, which I rather liked..

Re: In the Club with the Pen

Very nice Pete, nice to see lots of white light to play with in there.
Lens?
Settings?
Videoing live music is, I find, not that easy. Half the bands I see have their amp controls superglued at 11. AND THEN the swines move around - just when you think you have the right settings!
Probably a dumb question, but did you have to take the shots somewhat covertly? As the angle is quite different to what I was expecting. Probably just me.

Re: In the Club with the Pen

Ah, it was a Very intimate setting. A small room at the back of a bistro with 9 performers and about 9 audience - so no standing up and no moving about apart from in between songs.

I used the Pen F with the 20mm f1.7 only .. set wide open with camera set to silent mode, aperture priority. I was intending to try the art filters but I relented and shot jpg and raw as usual, and did the effects in photoshop...

Oh, and if you shoot bands.. note, no mic stands

Re: In the Club with the Pen

Sounds like a lovely little spot for some acoustic stuff. Most of the folk stuff around here is in pubs, which tend to be deliberately less well lit.
I can only usually get 2 evenings a week to go and watch performances (the missus wants a life too), so I dont see so much of this, but would like too.
The only other thing I would say, not a criticism - an observation, is that I always try and get as far to the left hand side of the room to start with. As most musicians are right handed, so you tend to see the front of the instrument as well as the performer interacting with it. But those shots might have been the ones you wanted, in which case they are crackers.

Re: In the Club with the Pen

I was able to claim "I'm with the band" on this occasion, as the gig is organised by a family member.

However when they "sent it round the room" ... anyone with a song or tune can play their party piece ... I declined when asked.

Firstly I didn't take my guitar.
Secondly, playing Blues in a Folk Club will go down like a lead balloon.
Thirdly, given 30% of the players there are actual professional musicians, having me play would be like taking soft fruit to a knife fight :-)

I take the point about head stocks and camera position. On previous occasions I have slunk around the bar with my camera and got different angles. Unfortunately the room really was only 20 feet by 10 and we sat in the only seats left. That's rock and roll, as they say.

Re: In the Club with the Pen

the venue looks very like our U3A musical coffee mornings. But we're much more spread out, which makes intimate shots like yours almost impossible to obtain. Next one's Thursday, so I'll have to try it differently...again. Noisy shutter isn't a problem - the noise is ear-splitting, with both talking and the music echoing around the walls!

Re: In the Club with the Pen

I drove through Midhurst one Sunday, on the way to the Weald and Downland Museum (recommended).

I didn't realise anyone lived there!
