Re: Olympus developing a new 500mm lens?

ISTR there being a vague bit in Oly's last roadmap which could well be something like a non-pro 100-400. Personally (and speaking as someone who owns both the 300/f4 and the ZD300/2.8) I'd like to them produce a something-to-300mm f4.5 zoom which works with the MC-14 and MC-20. You'd still have your 400mmish f6.3 for birding plus a very useful reach and brightness for photographing crepuscular mammals or for outdoor sports. But I've been banging this particular drum for over a decade without success so I'm not holding my breath...

They should have had a 100-400 on the market years ago in my opinion without all the issues etc of the Panasonic 100-400 f4-f6.3 that is my reason for never buying that one but one produced by Olympus I would have in a heartbeat for airshows etc.

I won't be holding my breath for the Olympus 100-400 :-(
Thomas,
What issues are you thinking of?

Re: Olympus developing a new 500mm lens?

Hi Tord,

The issues regarding stiff focusing, mount issues regarding small fragments/particles of metal from the lens mount etc.

All the gripes that were reported on the forums made me not want to spend my money on the Panasonic 100-400 I just was not prepared to take the risk.

As I said I think Olympus need to produce an affordable rival to the Panasonic it is greatly needed in my opinion.

Also when I sent an email to Panasonic regarding all these issues albeit several years after the 100-400 was released to ask if the problems had been rectified on later lenses they did not reply with any constructive response.

Not to mention the reported variability between samples of the Panny 100-400 and their, again reported, refusal to repair the lens preferring to offer a small discount on a brand new replacement.
Definitely something to be avoided. (yes, I know some lucky people have got a great sample but I'm not willing to take that chance)

The numerous discussions on here and elsewhere regarding the non-repair policy adopted by Panasonic, together with badly fitting lenses has put me off purchasing anything bearing the Panasonic name. For a world wide company to refuse repairs on expensive equipment only a few months out of warranty is beyond reprehensible. In a better world not governed by big business and profits it would be illegal.

This thread has now mutated into a discussion about Panasonic repair policy instead of a new telephoto from Olympus...

With all due respect, It was yourself who asked the question "Thomas, What issues are you thinking of" when Thomas Westhead mentioned that the Panasonic 100-400 had issues.

Everything else was in response to your question.

Its the way of a discussion...……….

With my 300mm pro and the 1.4 TC, I would be wondering whether the extra 80mm of focal length would be worth such a price tag, which undoubtedly will be large/huge....

How do others get on with the 300mm pro and 2X TC??

Re: Olympus developing a new 500mm lens?

The arrival of the MC20 has revolutionised my view of the 300/4. It has enabled me to get photos that would previously have been impossible; for example the kingfisher pix I posted on foto fair a few weeks ago. The MC20 seems barely to degrade the IQ and I find the combination ideal for birds and for small creatures at a couple of yards or so. I've yet to fully master a 600/8 lens handheld although the IS does well.

Re: Olympus developing a new 500mm lens?

I'm very happy with the results from my 300mm f4 + MC20. I've only used it handheld so far.

When I'm using 2 cameras, my 300m f4 + MC20 are on my OMD EM1 Mk II (birds, animals and long range butterflies/dragonflies) and my 40 -150mm f2.8 + MC14 are on my OMD EM5 Mk II for butterflies/dragonflies/nearby birds with no/minimal cropping, giving me 56 - 210 and 600mm (with optional 300mm, or 420mm if swopping converters), but it's a big gap between 210 and 600mm.

I just can't justify the additional expense/weight/space carrying a further, even larger lens to swop around bodies (either the 500mm prime or 150 - 400mm zoom) and converters. I'd rather Oly produced something like a compact 75 - 225mm weathersealed zoom that accepted both teleconverters.

The above combinations fit in a 20L backpack together with a few accessories, 12-40mm f2.8 and/or 60mm macro, tripod, bins, lightweight waterproof, drink and snack. I'm not getting anything larger, that's not why I chose m4/3. And I still enjoy going out with just a 10L rucksack.

P.S. This 500m prime wasn't on the 'roadmap', why, is it about as useful as BoE 'forward guidance'?

Re: Olympus developing a new 500mm lens?

Already enrolled on weightlifting course for the 500 pro prime or the 150/400 pro zoom, might as well go A9 ff with 400 lens & now eye tracking for animals etc.Oly should go global shutter asap with really advanced AF, this is the big area to spend on new stuff, too Olympics biased at present.

Re: Olympus developing a new 500mm lens?

It's huge compared to the 100-400.

I'm expecting somewhere in the £6,000 region. Which will create a cry of horror amongst the pixel peepers and a stampede amongst the pro wildlife photographers to get their hands on one.

I'm not sure this wildlife photographer - just booked 16 days in the Kruger for February - will be in the stampede. That price will be more than the whole holiday for two.
