Spoof emails...

Had an email from Amazon arrive today in the SPAM Folder with an order number which I didn't recognise with an attachment?

I checked their web-site _My Orders _ to see what was what... the Order Number didn't show up?

Went to the Security Page to find Amazon have a message regards this, which states - Check the Order Number and if false, delete the email without opening it. There is an attachment included within the email.

They are aware of these emails - there is no need to inform them - and they are carrying out their own investigations.

Hope this is of use?

Re: Spoof emails...

Had a few like this from Ebay customers complaining of non-delivery of items which had been paid for! How stupid do they think I am?

Email attachments can be just as dodgy as links in a phishing email.

'Service at Paypal' keep emailing me about bank accounts that need reverification. The main body of the emails purports to be from the bank, but the sender is service at paypal. How stupid do they think I am?

Re: Spoof emails...

I get the PayPal one and emails from RBS, Barclays and other banks about fraud on my accounts...I don't bank with any of them. In fact I'm pretty sure my bank doesn't have my email address.

I'm fortunate I get anti fraud training at work, but with some I can see how people get caught out.

Unfortunately, this sort of crime continues to pay which is why, like many other crimes will never go away.

The odd warning here and there all helps to remind us to be on our guard which can't be a bad thing.

Re: Spoof emails...

I had the Nigerian Prince email, shortly before I was due to change broadband provider. For a deposit into his account I'd net 10% of a $20,000,000 transfer through my bank account. I replied saying I was overdrawn and needed to borrow £50 from him to OK the transfer. We exchanged emails for nearly three weeks I chnaged providers. Winding the sender up is really satisfying!

I don't get any '419' scam emails these days. I miss their wildly imaginative schemes!

Re: Spoof emails...

I got a very convincing one from "Apple" the other day wanting me to verify my account. Then I realised it was sent to a different e-mail address than the one I use as my Apple ID .

Mailwasher is very good at filtering these things out; it checks addresses with spam blockers, finds viruses and warns about attachments. It maintains your own personal blacklist and whitelist and can "bounce" unwanted e-mails so the sender thinks your address is invalid. I've been using it for years and never had a virus infection from an e-mail. I have no connection etc etc.

I'm afraid my wife fell for this one. The main reason she was hoodwinked was because the credit card linked to her paypal account was about to expire, so it sort of made sense. Luckily (depending upon which way you look at it) at the time, she was on a particularly high dose of painkillers which affect her mental abilities. As a result she made a complete mess of filling in the details - mixing up bank accounts and passwords etc. What she filled in made no sense at all so the con artists got nothing useful. When she realised it was a con she contacted all the parties and changed passwords etc. The distress all this caused her was very upsetting. The folk who carry out these scams are the scum of the earth
