14-42 vs 14-54 vs 12-60 Advice needed

I need some advice.

I currently have the 14-42mm standard lens that came with my E400 and E510.

I have enough money for the 14-52mm, and I am trying to sell some equipment to get enough for the 12-60mm.

Question. How much better is the 14-54 vs the 14-42mm and How much better is the 12-60mm va 14-54?

Assume that the lens will be on an E-510.

Might help you decide.

I have the older 14-45 kit lens and did buy a 14-54. Certainly benefits from being faster ( f2.8 ) and I would say there is some improvement to image quality. Whether this improvement is enough to justify cost only you can decide, for me using E1 it was as it made the whole package weatherproof as well.

Cant comment on 12-60 though!

regards

John.

Thanks for the replies.

Given the very very small difference between the 14-42 and the 14-54, I have decided not to get th 14-54. I now need to find about 400 to get the 12-60mm :-)

Definitely the best option, the 12-60mm is a superb lens.

If you like the 12-60mm then take a look at the 7-14mm as well. It's a beast of a lens, weighs a ton and the coverage angle and quality mind blowing.

Re: 14-42 vs 14-54 vs 12-60 Advice needed

The lens choice comes down to money. I can afford the 14-54 with the E510. My insurance has sent me a cheque for my broken E510 (It look 4 days for them to sort it all out!)

I am trying to shift some of my old camera (E400 plus loads of extras) and network equipment so I can raise the cash for a better lens.

Good luck with the cash raising. The 12-60mm covers most of the range covered by both the 11-22mm and 14-54mm (an extra 3 degrees at the long end, a loss of 5 degrees at the wide end and a slight speed reduction), but for your money the 12-60mm is excellent value as you are getting almost 2 lenses for the price of one.

John,

If cost is an issue and there is a big difference in price between the 14-54 and 12-60 then consider that if you look around you might find the 14-54 at a very good price especially now people are letting them go second hand. I managed to get a brand new one for 350 delivered. S/H ones have gone on ebay for the 300 mark. It would certainly complement your 510 for now until such time you bag the winning lottery ticket.

Re: 14-42 vs 14-54 vs 12-60 Advice needed

Hello John

I recently had the same dilema, wanted to upgrade from the kit lens for my E510/E1, I initially convinced myself to go for the 12-60 and was happy with that choice, however after a couple of weeks more pondering and a little research I decided to save the cash and go for the 14-54 f2.8. Optically there is very little difference if any between the 2 lenses (both outstanding) and of course the benefit of the SWD is not applicable to the E510, it just reverts back to 'normal' focus.
Last Friday I ordered a brand new 14-54 for only 295 delivered (UK source, Ian Kelso) which is less than the last second hand one to sell on ebay, from memory that one went for around 310 on Fri eve.
I think at present for me anyway at this moment in time this deal represents greater value for money than the 12-60.
Good luck with which ever one you decide is right for you.

PS if you do not have a contact for Ian Kelso, I will be happy to oblige, I know many forum members have used his services and will vouch for him.

Re: 14-42 vs 14-54 vs 12-60 Advice needed

Absolutely. I cant imagine you would see almost 400 worth of difference by opting for the 12-60 over 14-54. Maybe if you were definately getting an E3 in the future and need the extra focussing speed, but by then something else will have come along.

Also consider that the 14-54 is 140 grams lighter and smaller in dimensions. That might balance better on your 510. The lens is proven to be a fantastic performer and would leave you quids in for wine, women and song...... especially if you can get it for 300.

I agree. I was shying away at the expense of buying a 14-54 for my E500. But when I bought my E3 I went for the 12-60. I think it was on the 'in for a penny etc.' basis!

But how much 'wine, women and song' can you get for 400 these days? I can remember when you could go to the cinema, buy a pint of beer and some fish and chips - _and_ still have enough left over for .......!

Re: 14-42 vs 14-54 vs 12-60 Advice needed

Also not sure that you wouldn't be better off with an 11-22 if you want the wide end. It is a beautiful lens - better IMHO than the 14-54.

The 7-14 is even lovelier, but less easy to use successfully, and as remarked above, it's very heavy (and requires lopping off an extra leg to pay for it)!

I have ordered the 12-60mm. I will pick it up next week. I managed to get a very very good price on it. PM me if you want to know more details.
