One thing to note is that you won't get the full 10fps with apertures smaller than wide open; it's more like 6fps at a guess. And these are small crops - 1/5th of the original frame.

To prevent hunting, increase the lock settings, one step at a time, i.e. Off->Low->Normal->High. Try to keep it as low as possible to ensure the AF stays responsive.

Ian: we were going to do a little article based on my presentation and spreadsheet, you still up for this?

Absolutely and especially now that the firmware upgrade has arrived.

Will update the firmware and give it try.
I intend on taking 90-250 and 50-200 SWD. 35-100 not long enough for Donington Park.
Ran out of time yesterday and it's raining today but the forecast is looking better tomorrow so will try some more lenses then, weather permitting.

Thanks Ian, I was try the new firmware out to day. But the fact we went to see Queen last night and I'm going to an i2 print day tomorrow meant I had to get some jobs done.
I will be very interested in your view once you have tried more 4/3rds lens.

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Since I have now put my money down for the 50-200 SWD lens (I know, I'm a bit crazy but it will probably suit me more than the 40-150 at the moment) can someone please confirm whether the focus ring is fly by wire or a mechanical clutch drive like the Sigma 150mm macro lens & Oly 12-60 SWD lens? I can't find any information on it in that respect.

All SWD lenses are the same - ie direct connection not fly by wire

For an AF lens the focus action of the SWD lenses is quite nice.

Incidentally, I used all AF points mode and Andy Elliot recommended C-AF Lock off.

I'd like to get the shutter speed up to 1/2000th and ISO down to 400 if possible. Better light and a faster lens will obviously help. I also had to add brightness in post processing (from RAW) so while I had centre-weight metering mode on plus +0.7EV exposure bias, I might increase the bias.

Ian
Ian,

I tried using the 300 with EC14 and the performance is better than before, and results are quite good as long as subject is not moving away from camera. I used the 9 centre AF points and CAF lock = Normal. (menu A).

By the way, is there any description of this menu? There are 5 values and not 2 as the manual states.

Quite often slight out of focus occurs, which can be seen in the
Herring Gull. Here are first and last frame from a sequence of 3, at 3 fps. First one has a slight back focus, in the last one the OOF is quite pronounced. Bird is following a predictable path slightly towards me so this should not pose a challenge in my opinion. 1/1600s, F/5

Sometimes though it works better than expected. The Black-headed gull is following a path slightly away from me, in this sequence of three (at 3 fps) focus is improving as the distance to bird increases. 1/2500s, F/5. Slight front OOF in the first, less in the second and the last one is good with focus on head.

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Now that I have my very little used 50-200 SWD lens (from a 100% rated Japanese supplier), I'll be having fun testing it with the Hi fps C-AF on the E-M1. This is the lens I could have had (for the E30) instead of buying the E-M5 kit, but now it gives me a more affordable lens than the Pro 40-150 to use on the E-M1 (with the all the great improvements in firmware updates).

Re: 15 frame sequence E-M1 BIF after firmware update

Worth remembering with the FT glass, they were never designed to run at 9fps. So if you use them wide-open, no problem, stop them down and the aperture mechanism can't keep up and you frame rate will drop .

Hi Andy, if using E-m1+50-200 SWD set to CAF with release set to sequence H, but then reduced to 5fps, would the improvements still be effective or must you select 9 or 10fps to get any benefits?

Thanks in advance Cliff

Yes, thanks. I'm quite aware of the limitations I get with the 14-54 II lens in that respect which weirdly is slower at 14mm f2.8 than 54mm at f3.5 so I don't expect miracles with this lens. I have actually checked the appearance of that (14-54 II) lens & it seems to be live viewing with the aperture blades closing down to approximately f3.5 (& opening for each exposure), but using that setting doesn't speed up the fps though (at 14mm). I understand (but haven't yet tried it) that the 50-200 lens is at it fastest fps ability at 50mm wide open? Despite its limitations in speed, I assume the Hi fps C-AF will still be reasonably effective at whatever fps actually happens, within limits, so long as I can keep with the subject (on the selected AF points) & selecting the most effective C-AF lock setting for that lens & situation (light & detail, movement & surroundings), starting at OFF then Low etc. as you have suggested.

Thanks for your helpful hints as they are greatly appreciated.
