Stemonitis on Sycamore Log: Featuring Photar 25mm

I was looking for a springtail which was not in its usual location on logs elsewhere in the garden. I lifted one rotting Sycamore log and found nothing of interest. The second one found this group of about 10 colonies of this slime mould on its side.

Having photographed it I put the log aside and went in search of more macro subjects. Picking up the log which was next to where the one with the SM had been, I saw this older colony on the cut end.

I decided to expose by sunlight, rather than my usual flash for such small subjects. For the lower magnifications I used my regular, Olympus 50mm macro. For the higher ones it was the Photar 25mm, initially by sunlight and then by single flash.

The FOV with the Photar was about 3.5mm wide, cropped to about 2mm for uploading. The stereo is crosseye.

Olympus EM-1 (manual mode), lens as above. Hand-held, some with support.

Harold
