First Try Out: Olympus Digital 50mm f2 macro ED 4/3 Lens on Full Frame

I made an enquiry on another Olympus blog as to whether anyone knew the size of the image circle of the lens. They did not and neither did Olympus UK.

My aim was to look at possibilities of using it on my full frame Sony A7R, getting the high resolution of the lens together with that of the sensor. I (mis)use all kinds of lenses for macro. I wanted to see if the lens would give full, or at least useful coverage of the sensor.

An issue here is one of how much glassware I can carry and the possibility of some rationalisation.

There were no full-function adapters freely available online so I purchased a manual one. By prefocusing the lens on the EM-1 and transferring it to the A7R, that was sorted. I was stuck with the lens on full aperture but, for macro, I could deal with that with tubes and/or TC.

The images (uncropped) here are from just a "quick & dirty" quickie test within half an hour of receiving the adapter. Shots were hand-held by sunlight, through a window for the macro. What it shows is slight vignetting at distance but none at macro focus (ca 90mm & ca 42mm FOV). The darkish corner in the second image is not vignetting.

Harold
