Under the Gateway

The Gateway Bridges (aka Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges) carry vehicular traffic from north to south and back over the Brisbane River to the east of the Brisbane CBD. The bridges are so high that all but the largest ocean liners can sail below them to the cruise ship terminal at Hamilton, which is upriver.

Re: Under the Gateway

Concrete structures can look surprisingly graceful when photographed at the right angle. I wonder why the bridges were not built just a little higher to accommodate the very biggest cruise ships? Perhaps they would be too big for the other facilities anyway.

Most cruise liners visit Brisbane can get under the Gateway Bridges. It is just the bigger ones such as Cunard's Queen Mary II and Queen Elizabeth which are unable to dock at Hamilton and dock at the Port of Brisbane instead.

Why? I suppose it is a case of where to draw the line. Building the bridges just a few metres higher would substantially increase their cost.

Edit: I have just received the following information from a friend of mine:

"Height of the bridge is equivalent to a 20 storey building. The distinctive shape is due to air traffic requirements restricting its height to under 80m while shipping needed a clearance of 55m, leaving only 25m to fit 1.5kms of bridge."
