Which Dashcam?

I was recently involved in a car accident that wasn't my fault, but may be difficult to prove otherwise. The first question my insurance company asked was did I have a dashcam. Despite being on a tight budget, I'm now thinking this might be a wise investment. Is there anyone with experience of these gadgets who can tell me what to look for when making a purchase or recommend a low cost model? All advice gratefully received.

Re: Which Dashcam?

Hi John hope you are OK after the accident. My son has one of those dash cams and he's pretty tech savvy, I'll ask him what he got and why for you.

I don't know if it will help or not but Auto Express have tested some of them earlier this year:

Re: Which Dashcam?

John my son got a BlackVue dash cam a couple of years ago. He said it came out well in reviews at the time but there are several newer versions out now.

Re: Which Dashcam?

Hi John, sorry to hear of your issue. Hope you and yours are unhurt and keeping well.

If on a tight budget, this one might be worth a look. AUKEY Dash Cam Full HD 1080P, 170 Wide Angle Lens, Night Vision, Motion Detection, G-Sensor, WDR and Loop Recording, Mini DVR Camera Dashboard - you can find it on Amazon

It is basic, no bells or whistles etc., but can take upto a 128Gb SD card. It's also well worth reading through the comments

Re: Which Dashcam?

I've had a 'mini0806' for a few years, but it's just started to give problems. It repeatedly switches off every couple of minutes. I'm going to look for a new one.

Just spotted this "bargain" on Amazon, but is it likely to be any good?

Re: Which Dashcam?

Take a look at the forum for your make of car, there might be a thread or two on using dashcams in the car, with tips on how to get power etc.

Re: Which Dashcam?

Julia was hit by a car joining a dual carriage way (he was stationary on the side lane - actually a small B road with no slip road entry, so I really do mean lane) behind another car that had enough space to join the nearside lane of the dual carriageway which Julia was on. The driver in the second car followed lazily without looking and hit the side of Julia's car - writing it off, incidentally. She could not have slowed to avoid the collision because of the speed and it was raining and traffic on the outside lane meant she could not have swerved to the right. The driver admitted liability on the spot after Julia pointed out she had dashcam footage. The video has been submitted along with our claim. That was 10 months ago. Our insurance company is very happy with it but the third party's insurance is playing hard ball and now refusing to communicate with our insurance company. It looks like it's going to court. Of course we are comprehensively insured with a good company and have protected no claims, but it's very annoying that the confounding evidence is being treated with minimal respect. But we shall see...

In that car we had an inexpensive 720HD dashcam but it did have an ultra wide 170 degrees lens. I have since fitted a better one (1080HD, Novatek processor, rear camera and it is flusher fitteding and it uses a capacitor instead of rechargeable battery) - it's like this one:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/19219628480...1899693&crdt=0

The rear camera is quite low res (VGA) and hiccups a bit as well as being a bit flat in contrast, though some of that blame must be attributed to the privacy shading of the rear window glass that it peers through. The front camera is really excellent. One issue with the capacitor system is that if you stall the car and immediately restart the camera may stay powered down.

I would not rush into buying one without knowing the full specifications and how well it works.

Many that claim to be 1080 are actually interpolated 720 resolution. The video processor also makes a big difference. The difference between our old cheapo model and the more expensive one we now use is like night and day.

Re: Which Dashcam?

Hi John,

I have our old Aukey camera in my rear windscreen (a couple of months back I was tailgated by a very aggressive lorry driver for several miles) and in the front I have a Nextbase camera.

The insurance company don't yet give discounts to the premium but did admit they should consider it.
