I don't know why I call him Gerald

But he hasn't got a house.

I wonder if he'll let me fit into his world.

Comments always welcome

Well what else could someone of our age call a mouse?

Very difficult to spot unless he moves, I hope the leaves adequately emphasise this little chappies size.

Very nice Nick - lovely series of pics there

I'm going to spoil all your fun now ('cause I'm like that ) and tell you that you've got some cracking pics of, not a mouse, but a Bank Vole - and what a little sweetie it is too!

I stand to be corrected of course - and I'm sure I will be, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is - lovely

Thank you Thea.

You could well be right, I hadn't even considered a Bank Vole and can't actually recall ever seeing one before (but then if I'd always thought they were mice!).

Must admit after trawling a few on-line definitions and galleries I remain confused - just what are the definitive distinguishing points?.

Anyway a couple more 'flawed' pics of Gerald just in case that helps someone tell me what to look for.

Awfully small compared to a Water Vole.

Re: I don't know why I call him Gerald

Having done another search and discovered this site

http://www.arkive.org/bank-vole/clet...tml?size=large

I reckon Thea is right (sorry Thea I didn't really doubt you).

The differences between this and the Wood Mouse (http://www.arkive.org/wood-mouse/apo...tml?size=large) appear to be - to me.

1) The red brown back covering
2) The ears are less prominent
3) The rear legs are proportioned differently.

Supposedly the head/snout is different but I'm very pushed to see any real difference in the photographs I can find.

So

I've seen a vole
I don't know why I call him Gerald
He's getting rather old
But he's a good vole

Thea's the kind of girl to put me right on things
I'll believe anything everything she tells to me

(Sorry)

Doesn't seem to scan quite as well.

Educational thing this photography

Re: I don't know why I call him Gerald

May I suggest

I've seen a vole, and he lives in a hole:
I don't know why I call him Gerald.
He's getting rather old
But he's a good vole

:-)

Pete

PS:

A shrewd observation, though you may well smell a rat
That mouse was not revoleting, what do you think of that?
Our vole looks quite enormouse when photographed this close
Oh! I'm prolix, I'm loquacious, and I'm getting quite verbose

OK - I give in - you are jolly clever and Thea is better at identifying species than I am.

But I did take the pictures, so I reserve the right to call him Gerald.

By the way it has been pointed out to me that the exif makes an interesting statement on the e-3, noise and IS.

Gerald looks quite unfazed by his fame. I wonder if he knows about all these discussions?

I thought there was a generic "Little Brown Bird" that covered the lot

He was actually very shy and I expect he would be mortified by all this attention.

The smallest sudden movement of the camera was enough to get him back into hiding.

Great set of images, were you in a hide when you shot them?
I think it's too small for a Bank Vole, could be a Field Vole though.
But I like his name.
