windows 7 orf viewer

Has anyone solved how to get widows explorer to display orf thumbnails. Its so family (wife) can scan my images to see which ones are candidates for preparation for wall hanging / cards etc. Already have picasa to browse but ideal would be to skim on explorer. I will then edit seperately in GIMP or Lightroom

Re: windows 7 orf viewer

I've never found Raw files to display in Windows. It has to be Lightroom, Birdge or a maker's own photo manipulation software.
Others may well confirm or contradict this.

Re: windows 7 orf viewer

fixed it myself. FYI link is here

http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/...w_codec_dl.cfm

only tested on a couple of sample orf's and have seen some sites suggesting it may perform a little eratically. would welcome feedback from other users.

for avouidance of doubt, this just makes the image appear in windows explorer icon just like it does for jpg's. Dont think it has any bearing on actual image editing software

regards

Microsoft designed Windows 7 with an application programming interface for supporting raw files. It is down to the camera manufacturer to provide a CODEC to translate the raw file which Windows 7 will then display in Explorer, picture viewer etc.

There was a older version of the Olympus CODEC that did not work very well, but the latest version works 100% of the time for me with Olympus E3 and OMD EM-5 raw files.

Re: windows 7 orf viewer

I find the display of ORF thumbnails in Vista erratic to say the least. For this reason I always shoot small, low res JPEGs in conjunction with raw.

Re: windows 7 orf viewer

I tried the Olympus one first and found that it used get stuck saying loading even though the image did show... not the end of the world but it was a little annoying.

I then tried the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack which seems a bit faster... I think this is the correct link but it's been so long since I installed it!

Re: windows 7 orf viewer

For viewing in Windows Explorer on Windows 7 I find the codec route works superbly. Never had any issues and it meanes that you are fully integrated with the OD and on't need to open another application even via default action. It's also free whichg is always good.
