Weekend Hover-fest

In and amongst the Hoverflies this weekend....
All taken with the E5 and either the Sigma 150 (with or without the EC-14) or the 50 f/2 with the EC-20.

Final approach...

Re: Weekend Hover-fest

Astounding

PLEASE share your technique / settings - I was out bug-hunting on the weekend with an E5 + Sigma 150 - these shots of yours put mine to utter shame.

Tripod or handheld? How far away from the subject? Focus point? Do you chase the bug or focus on the flower and wait? natural light or flash? Aperture and shutter speed? I've so many more questions...

Wonderful work

Great result.

Out of interest what do you think your shots to keepers ratio was?

I am very curious to learn about your technique and the settings you used (even though I don't think I can equal these shots!)

Re: Weekend Hover-fest

Thanks very much for your comments everyone
I had a great deal of fun and frustration in equal measure taking these

Ceri and flemmingS,
My settings varied but in general terms I was shooting in manual mode, flash assisted (defused some times), flash sync to 1/250 shutter speed, apertures from f/8 to f/10, centre focus point.
I tended to follow a Hoverfly around in some cases manually assisting focus (because of the long throw with the 150mm), particularly for the in flight shots.
I took most of these in a sitting or kneeling position, elbow braced and generally trying to be as steady as I could. They are all hand held with the HDL-4 grip fitted.

Andy,
I think I reeled off about 160-170 shots, of those I suppose about 60-70 are sharp enough to be considered worthy of more attention.
I then whittled these down to 30 that I would be happy with. So a 15-20% hit rate I guess.

A very impressive series Huw, these certainly are testimony to how good the E-5's IQ is.

Your our opening shot is extra special.

Re: Weekend Hover-fest

Nothing less than fantastic Thank you so much for sharing such brilliant macros. I am hoping you post them on a general forum where the Canonikoners could see them and weep

Next: Pleeeeaaaase, can someone tell me where I can get a Sigma 150??

Huw, which ones did you take with the 50mm and EC20? It's a combination I have, but have never gotten anything close to such sharpness with my EC20 attached and I'm still not sure it's properly repared after it's accident three years ago.

Did you use the flash on top of the camera or RC-mode?

I think it's worth saying again: Brilliant!

Thanks very much for your encouraging comments Cathrine

I might pop a few over on Talkphotography later and see what sort of reaction they get
The Sigma 150 unfortunately is going to be pot luck as I believe it is no longer being manufactured. So it's either going to be a case of phoning around retailers or keeping an eye out for a previously owned one

Regarding the 50 f/2 and EC-20, have a look at shots 5 to 9, they were all taken with that combination. The flash was hot-shoe mounted.
