Re: New functionality with OM-D E-M5 firmware update

It feels a bit ironic that this firmware update is more exciting for me than the launch of a brand new camera and collapsing kit zoom.

Thanks Ian and PaulT for checking out the Jpeg exposures.

Re: New functionality with OM-D E-M5 firmware update

Hi to get thew smal focus piont press ok this will bring up the mini menu screen, with the arrow keys move down to the grid icon which is one below exposure metering patern icon and press ok then scroll through until you get small which the pattern would look like little square blocks with space between the press ok.

You should know have the small focus point as on EM 1.

Dave

Oh dear, this actually looks to be a useful firmware update - I might have to do my camera.

I just did mine. Full batteries in camera and grip. Long wait (I suspect that is the download from web and check the file phase) and the heart in mouth bit from PC to the camera takes a minute or two, but it was all uneventful. Phew.

ISO 100 could be useful - particularly if you like your waterfalls silky.

Small AF area is maybe useful, but I suspect it performs best with m4/3 lenses rather than my old 4/3 glass.

Hmm. Another excuse to save up for that nice new 25mm f1.8 then.

It is John. I've just done mine this morning with great results using the small focus points & I wish I had this a long time ago. Now all I want is the same on my Stylus 1 as there is no magnification option with that camera, but these small focus points would be so helpful there too. Ah well, I can wish!

I uploaded both camera and lens - no problems focusing, even seems to be a bit quicker!?

Re: New functionality with OM-D E-M5 firmware update

I got an email from Olympus yesterday advising me of the E-M5 firmware update!

Anyway, updated just now and it took about 5 minutes to do body and 12-50mm lens. Had to run the updater twice do do so though, as after it updated the body it decides it had had enough of talking to the camera so I had to turn it (camera) off and on again.

Is there any advantage of the small focus box (in the update) over the zoom focus box that we already have? Its square as oppossed to rectangular so its a smidgen smaller but with the zoom focus box you have the convenience of assiging zoom magnify to the Fn2 button (or button of your choice) and its there at your fingertips should you need it rather than having to assign the new small focus box to a myset and going through the menus to call it up.

The single point AF size zoom is very handy for set situations but in my experience it reverts to the pre-set set points very easily. If you want to select the focus point using the grid the smaller points are a definite bonus when you need them.

Re: New functionality with OM-D E-M5 firmware update

It doesn't really feel like a release 2.0 to me. Two improvements, rather than a wholesale upgrade to the software.

There are plenty more changes that should be technically possible:-
assigning names to mysets, or creating more mysets;
a proper in-camera panorama mode;
some more art effects;

Re: New functionality with OM-D E-M5 firmware update

Is the iSO100 mode only useful for shooting in JPEG? If it's using ETTR then pulling down ISO200 (am I correct in that?) then would processing RAW yourself achieve the same thing?

Would be interested to see a comparison of "ISO100" RAW and ISO200 RAW if that exists.

Re: New functionality with OM-D E-M5 firmware update

Updated mine this morning, that lower ISO will help in the summer months when last year I often hit the max shutter speed with my 45mm 25mm & even my pannys 12-35 & 35-100mm at f2.8. One of the many reasons I purchased the M1
