WWT Welney "photographers hide"

At Welney there's a hide downstairs from the main viewing hide that can be rented out on a day rate of £15, I'm going to pop over there this week sometime to investigate and potentially book it.

Is anyone here interested is joining me? (you can buy the coffees!)

I'll try and get down there so I can see what the view is like and take a couple of snaps to illustrate.

If it's swans you're after, it's a bit early yet, isn't it?

Yup, I thought I'd ask now so that we can plan it out for the later opening in the winter season! (from 1 November onwards). it's not that far from home so "nipping over" to suss it out and get some advice from the staff isn't difficult.

Bit far for me alas. But I visited Welney earlier this year (August). Some good birds there at that time.

Well worth a visit...

Re: WWT Welney "photographers hide"

Right,

I've been over and had a long chat with one of the managers.

The photographers hide is available on an individual basis at £15 each per day. If we want to attend as a group of between 6 and 12 they will book it for exclusive use and charge £50 for the day. (Plus standard admission charge for non-members)

The hide is in the basement of the main public hide and as such is liable to flooding in January and February, so out of necessity is basic.

If it is flooded it is useable to a point as long as you're wearing wellies!

She suggested that mid-late November would be an ideal time to go there.

Is anyone interested in me booking this up on the basis outlined above and if we have enough people should I try and see if we can get some teaching support from Olympus or one of the pros? (Via Ian).

Photos from inside the hide to give an idea of what it's all about!

A view of the inside of the hide, as can be seen there's shoulder height viewing ports as well as some knee height and a couple of ankle height, I'm sure as a group we could organise turns at the various levels! ???

We would be able to use the "high chairs" from upstairs so no need to bring camping chairs, but the very low level will need something to sit/lay on to use, which dependant upon the water level could be a chair or cushion or something - there's only two of the very low level ports.

A view out of the hide showing a sort of idea of what can be seen (12mm photo)

A snap out of one of the square ports at knee height, as can be seen the birds don't stray far away! (12mm)

A snap out of the higher ports (12mm)

Another snap out of the higher port (420mm)

EDIT:

The photos I took came out very poorly and grainy, and I didn't notice on the day I'd left the camera on macro settings f16 or so!

Re: WWT Welney "photographers hide"

Went to Welney a few years ago with Andy Elliott and had a great time and that was just in the standard visitor gallery/hide.

What a great idea and a good bit of research re hire, etc.

I'd be interested in attending along with my wife, who is also an Oly user.

Thanks Walti.

I'll give this a bump so it's visible on the front page for the weekend.

I didn't realise it was exclusively for Olympus users. So no serious bird photographers allowed.

I always found the best way to deflate the ego of a Canikon user was to ask them what books and magazines their photos were published in. They mostly left me alone after that. Any that didn’t were encouraged to 'go away' by pointing out that I was working even if they weren't.
