4 those lucky enough...

to have Channel 4 or 4 HD

Today on from 8:00pm to 9:00pm

The Plane That Saved Britain

Documentary. 2012 Paralympics presenter Arthur Williams presents a love letter to a largely forgotten WWII aeroplane, the De Havilland Mosquito. The wooden-framed bomber was, in 1942, the fastest plane ever produced by the British, making it an important weapon in the Allied bombing campaign over Europe. Williams explores why the secret of of the Mosquito's success was also its downfall, and why an American millionaire has spent eight years rebuilding one.

Re: 4 those lucky enough...

Unfortunately, I never met him. As ex RAF I, surprisingly have a thing about aircraft, especially something like the Mossie. A friend of mine passed away last year and he too was a Pathfnder, flying in the Lancaster. He never would speak of his wartime 'escapades,' modest to the end. We found medals galore along with a wealth of artifacts which we sent to the RAF museum.

Re: 4 those lucky enough...

A great program enjoyed every minute. I was quite surprised that we in this country have not got the Mosquito, I liked the young presenter and his enthusiasm.John

Re: 4 those lucky enough...

There's a Mosquito museum just up the road from here. At the place where it was designed.

Re: 4 those lucky enough...

I was a De Havilland apprentice in the late 50s. As part of the induction, apprentices were shown a film about the Mosquito. We nicknamed it 'How De Havillands Won The War'!

The film was actually rather interesting and I see it's still available at the museum, where the original prototype is on display.

Re: 4 those lucky enough...

Really good programme, lots of info and I learned some new stuff.
I hadn't realised it was SO fast, and that anti-U-Boat cannon was great!
It was terrible to see the airshow crash, and probably just a carburettor float design ... unbelievable.

If you missed it, it will be repeated on 4-7 this evening at 8pm. Agreed - a terrific programme with an enthusiastic and knowlegeable presenter.

Don't be daft... everyone knows it was the butler.

After watching... you might want to try here for an added bonus - a Mosquito from WWII has been rebuilt and is now flying state-side. Must be nice to be a multi-mi$$ionaire and can afford to have your own WWII air force.
