Spam attack last night - new member registration closed temporarily

We had a significant attack from spammers last night and into this morning - more than 20 malicious accounts were registered. Thankfully no damage was done but because of the sheer volume of the attack the new member registration facility is suspended until later today.

If you are looking to register on the site, please email forum-admin@e-group.uk.net and I will help you to register manually. Assuming you aren't intending to spam us

It's a shame there are always the spoilers somewhere.

Thanks for a well & fairly moderated site. It is a pleasure to be part of it (you all) here.

I noticed that and was going to PM you but then someone, John Perriment possibly, started dealing with them. They were also spamming DPNow.

Re: Spam attack last night - new member registration closed temporarily

Yes - DPNow especially attracts a lot of spammers, which is very strange because the forum is much quieter than most. I'm reviewing our registration filters.

John very handily dealt with the bulk of the problem here and has volunteered to be a mod on DPNow as he is a bit of a night owl - as I am but I have to get up early during term time so late nights are fairly rare for me.

Re: Spam attack last night - new member registration closed temporarily

I would look at IP addresses of the bots and ban some IP ranges. On some of my forums I ban registrations from all of China, Russia and Ukraine (this of course depends on the forum). I use this vB plugin to select countries: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=198440

Also, vB plugins like Spam-o-matic are quite useful.

I'm 5 hours behind you so it was mid evening when the spammers started.

We do ban IP ranges and selected email address parts and domains.

We have bona fide members from China and Russia and other countries where many spammers originate from so I won't ban whole countries. Spam has not been a major issue for the e-group and this episode is by far the worst. Let's hope it is simply transient.

Re: Spam attack last night - new member registration closed temporarily

I did look at the IP addresses of the spammers last night but they were completely random with no pattern whatsoever. I suppose a network of spammers don't have to be based in the same country or even the same continent.

What they were posting was never going to fool anyone, it was just tiresome and annoying. The policy of not allowing new members to post links seems to be an effective second line of defence.
