Wink Re-inventing the wheel

As Yosser Hughes would say, "Gizza job". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-43046142

It would appear the government must be hard up for new ways to confuse the the education wallah's and the BeeB must be dredging up items from the Ye Olde news files or, been sent back in time by Dr. Who.

On a more serious note from the BBC... What do you know? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-42962328

I got Q1 wrong.
It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.

Re: Re-inventing the wheel

I got 8/11, and two questions I talked myself out of the correct answer. As you do!

Two points:
1. the ability to do quick mental calculations is still of value. If you don't know your multiplication tables, you can't do it.

2. Why does all of school have to be "fun"? You go there to learn, not to have an endless party. That doesn't mean it all has to be grueling; but if they leave school knowing next to nowt, they won't do well in life. You only have to watch quiz programmes on TV to see how poor education appears to be now. No basic history, geography, poor English, and an inability to use logic or reasoning to get to the right answer. We often watch The Chase, and marvel at how often a contestant who says, "I'm doing a Master's at X uni" does no more than resort to wild guesses at the answers.

Re: Re-inventing the wheel

There are some things you just have to learn by rote and times tables are one of them. There is immense joy in Mathematics (I know, there's something wrong with me) but you can't see it if you struggle to see two two numbers match up.
