12-60 SWD Sharp enough?

Every time I take pictures with my E30 and 12-60 SWD and zoom in to 50 to 60 mm, I am a bit disappointed with the results, especially a when doing landscapes or taking pictures of objects quite a distance away. The pictures do not look very sharp.
As an example and to test I took some pictures this afternoon from my bike, standing about 30 meters away. The weather was good; a bit sunny. Although I most of the time shoot in RAW (which needs sharpening), this time I used JPEG and did no sharpening. Pictures were taken using a tripod and I focussed on the rear wheel of the bike. Speed was 1/160 sec, aperture 5.6, ISO 100.
I added two pictures: one the original (resized for use at the site) and a crop from the bike (also resized).

Am I correct that the pictures are not sharp (enough) or am I expecting too much now? If you agree that this could be better, what can I do to improve? Is something wrong with the lens? How can I find out what is wrong? Pictures close by and wide angle pictures with the same lens seem to be Ok.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Henk

Re: 12-60 SWD Sharp enough?

OK, there is no metadata in the image files so to be able to help it would be useful to know the ISO, aperture and shutter speed set. Also, where did you set focus on in the scene? Was the image hand held and if so was IS Switched on or off?

Normally, the 12-60 should have way more sharpness than an E-30 can resolve.

Re: 12-60 SWD Sharp enough?

Ian,
I think all you wanted to know is in the text. ISO 100, speed 1/160 sec, aperture 5.6 and used a tripod. Focussed on the rear wheel of the bike.
Thanks

Re: 12-60 SWD Sharp enough?

Ian,
Extra info: IS was on. Shouldn't be on when using a tripod, right? But has it a big effect on sharpness?

Yes - repeat the experiment with IS disabled
