E-3 or save for an E-5?

Hello,

I'm considering purchasing an E-3 after years with my E-300. Most reviews claim the camera to be very good however with prices coming down all the time would I be better off saving for a E-5?

If so what prices have people seen E-5's going for? My budget is sub 300 for the E-3 body.

Re: E-3 or save for an E-5?

Unless you have some top lenses or really want the extras of the E-5 then the E-3 is an excellent and very solid body that will produce very good results.

Have fun

Re: E-3 or save for an E-5?

Yes, the E3 (or E30) are excellent by all acounts (no personal experience).

I would wait until Olympus make their announcement of a camera capable of utilising four thirds glass (whatever that may turn out to be). You may have to wait until the end of the year (my guess) for the announcement but some people predict autumn.

If its a good announcement then you may wish to save for the new camera (it will be expensive). Also, if its a good announcement then the price of the E5 may fall (I can't see it going up!) and this may help you decide.

Since you are thinking maybe of saving for the E5 then a little bit of waiting may be all to the good.

Re: E-3 or save for an E-5?

For an inexpensive upgrade at the moment I would keep the investment down and go for an 520 or even a 620 (harder to find but still cheap) prices are plummeting at the moment.

The E-3 and E-5 are much bigger too.

Re: E-3 or save for an E-5?

As an E3 user I've had no complaints with mine it has always delivered excellent results. I'm sure the prices in the pre-loved market will tumble as new cameras are released.

Re: E-3 or save for an E-5?

The E-3 is a very capable camera I still use mine alongside my E-5. A lot depends on your photography and budget, which I see is sub 300. E-3, E-5 and E-510/520 share the same battery as the E-300 so that may help.
There is due a new model as OM User says to make the best of the 4/3 lens OM-D and EPL5 can have focus issues with non micro 4/3 lens.

Re: E-3 or save for an E-5?

Hi there Wilsonian!

Just to throw something into the mix how about something in between - an E-30. Less than E-3 price but with the E-5 sensor. You don't get the weather sealing and they are a bit smaller than the E-3 /5 but they are also slightly lighter (certainly mine is compared to the E-1 I also have). I had been wanting an E-3 for a little while when my E-30 came up on ebay - I haven't regretted getting it at all!

Cheers,

Ralph.

Re: E-3 or save for an E-5?

I have seen E-3 and E-30 fetch about the same amount these days. If an E-5 would be selling anywhere near 300 Pounds, I would own one right now - but I don't
My main reason for getting me an E-30 instead of an E-3 (I upgraded from E-520) was, the possibility to adjust auto focus. The E-620 also has this option, I think. It is a very very needed feature in my experience and never ever will I buy a body again, which does not allow for adjustments to be made.

Sorry, if this makes your decision even more difficult,
Falk

Falk - I would be interested to know how you adjust auto focus on the E30 - it's not something I have come across.
