Exposure option presets

I recently encountered a challenging situation where I had to contend with widely varying light conditions changing quite quickly. The situation was photographing circling birds against an overcast sky, swooping down with a background of trees and grass which was a few stops dimmer than the sky.

It would have been a godsend to use an option to toggle between 2 pre-set exposure settings. Some cameras allow the user to preset different settings on a toggle switch. I remember reading that the E5 was programmable in a similar way.
Does such a feature exist or did I misread something? Has anyone used this feature if it does exist? Can you share your experience with it?
