Winter visitors

Well, I didn't get out in the snow to take any pictures. There were some nice views to be seen when I had to take the car out but the eye can see very selectively and camera would not have done it justice amongst all the traffic even if I could have pulled over.

As another forum member (David) remarked, play with your kit indoors and take pictures of birds through the glass windows. So here are a selection of the visitors I have seen in the last week. All taken handheld at 300mm (M.ZD 75-300mm zoom). Even wide open (F6.7) with (auto) ISO at 3200 I was still only getting shutter speeds of 1/250 second for most of the shots.

We get robins most of the year but they seem to be a bit braver in winter.

I hear the woodpecker most mornings in the woods at the top of the road but we have only seen him a few times in our garden. Food must be harder to find.

I hope I have identified this one right as a fieldfare, a definite winter visitor if I'm correct.

A better shot.

We get lots of blackbirds.

And finally a starling.

Re: Winter visitors

Lucky you to have Fieldfare in the garden, and so many other visitors too.

Reflections from the glass are a big problem with this type of photography. I read a tip to cut a hole in a sponge. Cellotape it to the window, and take through the hole. I can confirm that this works a treat.
