Anyone have thoughts on this - spotting telescope for Oly 4/3

Just browsing eBay killing time and stumbled across this spotting scope with adapter for E series cameras.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/25-75X-Telesco...QQcmdZViewItem

It's certainly cheap enough to risk I reckon... thoughts...?

I would not risk my money on it.

You would also probably get hit for import duty/tax and the collection fees from the courier. This would push the cost up another 20-30.

I also looks like a mirror lens design. Prepare for the doughnuts.

Hi John,

This looks like a mirror lens. If so, instead of disc shaped defocussed areas in the background, you will see doughnut shaped rings

Other than that - it looks like it could be fun.

Ian

I can understand why it look interesting.....I have also had the same thoughts.

In the end I purchased a cheap (100) Celestron 60 SLT telescope, for the mount, but found it was not bad at taking moon and other images.

You will also need to watch our for CA (purple/green fringing).

If you do get one I would be interested in seeing real example images.

Yep Ian, that's exactly the reason I am considering this... I don't feel it is too much money to waste, but I am also sure one can get at least some form of image on it... maybe allbeit shite

PS: Just sent you a PM on FTU...

John - can you connect your telescope to your E-510...? What connector did you use to accomplish that...?

What I am after here is just a play around with connecting a spotting scope to my E-3 so I can have some more fun on my walks with the birdies... There's loads of areas and reserves around Newport where I can spend hours tinkering away, and would love to have a delve into this aspect.

I purchased a cheap T2 to 4/3rd mount for about 12 on ebay.

I then purchased a T2 to telescope adapter. I used an eyepiece version which should work with most telescopes. Its not pretty and it has it flaws, but my later moon shots are and were better than any of my lenes (including the bigma) for moon shots.

Just watch out for a lot of CA.

Re: Anyone have thoughts on this - spotting telescope for Oly 4/3

No ideal to be honest....well at least on my setup.

You can get better telescopes that can support cameras in a better way.

The image quality is not great and you cannot zoom as it is a fixed focal length (I cannot use barlow eye pieces as to adjust the zoom levels)

I will try to setup the telescope and take a couple of images. I will post them on my website in full jpg format and put a link in this thread. I will try to do this tomorrow.

John

Might be worth your while talking to these people:

http://cgi3.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....kies_unlimited

who specialise in astronomical equipment and regularly import from China.

The scope you linked to sounds a bit too cheap to be much good, but might be fun. However, you could pick up a used Tamron 500mm SP mirror lens for the same money - generally seems to have been thought a good performer in it's day, although not up to the standard of the OlyCanNikon catadioptric offerings. At least I hope it's good. I just bought one myself after struggling with a cheap Sirius 500mm I've had for years... just promising enough to be worth pursuing.

Personally, I don't necessarily dislike the doughnuts as much as most people seem to. I think they're out of fashion as much as anything else.
