Volucella inanis

These are from 3 August, using the Oshiro 2:1 60mm macro and twin flash. The flowers are goldenrod. Some images have been moderately cropped.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Not much of a photo, but I chased this little thing which is about 3mm long around the edge of one of the raised beds for at least 4 meters and it did not stop. That must be a marathon at my scale!

Better luck next time!

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

It's a staphylinid, or Rove, beetle (short wing-cases) and probably a Sepedophilus species.

I think it is too slender and it lacks the black tip of the abdomen.
The hairs do look rather long for Sepidophilus.

Mark,

It think it's a Clubiona. Did it jump a lot when disturbed?

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

I went off to a local small nature reeserve in a disused limestone quarry for a macro safari. I was hoping to see dragon flies and I did but I saw so much more some of which I could not get close enough to I need to return hopefully we will have some nice weather soon.

The moth is a Silver Y. You can probably work out how it got its common English name.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Alf,

A very nice set. The dragon is a Darter and they tend to keep returning to one of, maybe three, perches, here you can wait.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

I recognize the moth but can't remember the common English name.

Edit. As soon as I posted I remembered.

Common Wave Moth. AKA Common White Wave.
