Re: Cheap and nasty....

That's very cheap but I wouldn't say it was a nasty lens. Mine is quite good really.

Re: Cheap and nasty....

Its not as good as the 12 ~ 40 by a long way, but its still a good lens.

I found its physical length was more of a handicap than its optical quality.

Re: Cheap and nasty....

It's an excellent lens for video work with the power zoom and it has a handy macro mode, too. The 12-40 is exceptional, the 12-50 is very good indeed as a budget kit lens goes.

Splash and dust proof too. I think the macro mode is excellent, my daughter now has mine on her E-M5 (most of the time)

Re: Cheap and nasty....

I agree it's an excellent lens and at that price a real bargain. I'm almost tempted to buy a spare!

Re: Cheap and nasty....

It's all down to what you're using it for, as ever!

The 12-50 is a great value travel lens and is weatherproof and focuses close. Unless you're producing large prints I bet you can't see any difference between it and the 12-40 (which can't focus as close and ain't too hot itself between 40 and 50mm ).

A friend of mine uses one on a battered old E-M1 body for beach and surfing shots. He got both second hand for zilch and isn't much bothered about rough treatment. His images are great.

Re: Cheap and nasty....

Well my one produces excellent sharp detailed images, won many a competition, with images from this lens on my em5 and one or two were heavy crops to then printed at 12x 16 the crop of one was about 50% x 60% crops the judge thought it was taken on a full frame canon.
He was astounded when I told him it was taken on an Olympus mirrorless camera.

Re: Cheap and nasty....

I have no problem with mine. Its semi-retired now I have the 12-40mm but I still use it when I want to go light.

Re: Cheap and nasty....

I could be tempted too, but have just bought a secondhand 75 / 1.8, so a bit short of funds at the moment. Must stop this feeding frenzy
