I'm back - sort of

Well, PC World are currently setting up my new pc; hopefully I'll collect it either today or tomorrow. In the meantime I've got an old computer going which gives me access to the Internet.

You've never, sort of, been really away, have you?

Re: I'm back - sort of

Welcome back John!
A new computer - very exciting, almost as exciting as a new camera!
Will be interested to hear what you've gone for. I think my laptop is on borrowed time, and I keep replacing bits on it, but PC's are a bit like cars. There comes a point where you realise the parts cost more than the car/PC/Laptop is worth! So at the moment I am watching for reports on new computer equipment on all the forums I belong to, so that when the time comes I have more of an idea of what's out there!!
I hope you're pleased with it John!

Good news John.

A bit painful in the pocket but at least you should get some benefits in reliability and performance.

Regards.

Re: I'm back - sort of

I'm on the new computer now, Windows 8.1 Aaaaaarrrrrrggggggghhhhhh!

Web pages that fill the screen, with no icons I can click to close the browser, very scary. Number pad on right of the keyboard doesn't seem to work, but Freya assures me that is normal - what's that all about then?

Very tricky when I'm on the phone to the BT helpline (because I've forgotten my email password - it was stored on the old pc and I never needed to use it) and they say, "right, close that page" and I say "help, how do I close it?" I confess that I'm using Windows 8 for the first time and suddenly they seem to understand the problem!

At least I've now worked out (with my daughter's help) how to access the old style desktop and a traditional web browser page. I think this is going to be a steep learning curve and a battle between me and Microsoft.

Re: I'm back - sort of

Install firefox and go back to old fashioned style browsing. I don't use any of the full screen "modern/metro" apps. However with update 1 (which can take half an hour to install) you should get the [x] box back in the top right hand corner. It took me a while (before update 1) to work out how to drag the cursor down the page and hold until the metro apps flipped around and closed.

I hated win 8 on my sisters laptop when I tried it and have never upgraded. Waiting for win 10 which is supposed to be free to anyone with win 8. Shows you how much trouble win8 was for Microsoft. What happened to 9 I wonder?

Re: I'm back - sort of

Welcome back John - hope you get up the learning curve quickly! Last time I ended up going for an iMac instead because PCW were doing some good interest free deals - that was also a steep curve for me but I think I've got there (or as far as I need to at any rate). It was interesting how difficult it was to find out how to do the simplest thing though (I remember getting very frustrated trying to work out how to get a CD Rom out of my disk drive because I never thought of consigning it on the desktop to "trash"!

Enjoy the new machine, and making all those resolutions about how much more organised you're going to be with this one :-)

It'll be some sort of marketing decision put forward by "consultants" to denote a new start, with no connection to 8. It will have cost millions to come up with the number 10!

Re: I'm back - sort of

It's official - I hate Windows 8. What happened to the lovely Windows Picture Gallery into which you could import your photos, tagging them and allocating file names at the same time? Why would any company want to ruin an excellent product, it doesn't make sense?

Re: I'm back - sort of

Windows 8 is hard work to get used to. Some good news is that Microsoft are offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 when it is released. The Windows desk top will be back in favour in Windows 10.
