Re: Good job the gear is good!

So I have a few thousand invested in Oly camera gear - I have several tens of thousands invested in a make of car that is being starved of a future by an American car maker that is refusing to allow new owners of the marque to produce cars and is in the process starving the market place of spare parts.

A viable working car becomes non viable if the unique spares eg electronic stuff is no longer available, the body etc may be fine but the whole thing is dead because of a missing electronic device.

The Oly situation hardly appears on my horizon.

Re: Good job the gear is good!

One thing that worries me about the future as an Oly user is batteries. Lithium batteries die gradually whether you use them or not - I saw an estimate of a loss of about 20% of capacity per year. So at some time they will need replacing, and if the market is not large enough to support a third-party manufacturer that could get very difficult. And while an E-5 with a 300/2.8 on it is an awesome thing of beauty, with no batteries it's one hell of an expensive paperweight.

I guess we would all be smiling wryly if it had happened to another well advertised company that A.P supports so well. meanwhile lets get on with using what we have.

Yes and how. Btw did you see this weeks Storyville - available on IPlayer - Inside Job - a superb American film about the criminal ******** who screwed the world over and walked away with their millions and not one of them has been charged with so much as a parking offence. Careful - it's very good but might leave you feeling hellishly angry at the criminal contempt and arrant hubris of these people

Thanks for that, I did wonder where it came from but when you know the derivation its very clever. I guess if I didn't suffer from the complaint I would have asked.

Regards

Re: Good job the gear is good!

I'm not afraid or adverse to discussing the issue but I'm not sure what to say. We all know that there has been an almighty financial c*ck up at Olympus which could potentially result in the company going out of business or ditching the camera division. I can't really add to that and I think to do so would require specialist knowledge or insider information. All we can do is keep an eye on developments to stay as informed as possible and hope things work out OK for Olympus cameras.

What's that all about? Blind brand loyalty no matter what - or parapetitus
I saw it mentioned on the internet a few days ago but didn't really follow it up. My initial reaction was that this is the company we all looked to for assurance that the E-System wasn't dead, not that the assurances we did get were all that convincing but when they try to conceal the truth from other directors there isn't much reason to believe that they were being honest with us.

So how does the news affect me? it doesn't, I use the E-System so whether Olympus sinks or swims is irrelevant as IMO the E-System effectively died a couple of years ago. I don't use the Pen system and have no intention of doing so having tried an EPL2. Panasonic still make m4/3rds cameras and seem to be more enthusiastic than Olympus anyway.

If Olympus Camera division was to fold tomorrow it wouldn't affect me, I'll continue to use my E-420 and if it packs in I'll revert to my E-3 or E-1 and I have pretty much all the lenses I need anyway. In the end while the cameras were/are good it isn't as if there aren't as good/better cameras out there. It just happens that what they do offer suits me but as far as the company goes they always seemed to be stumbling from one crisis to the next with no real commitment or direction.
