Speckled Wood Butterfly on Brown Leaf

You might say that the butterfly would have chosen a leaf of a colour with which it would merge and be difficult to spot. However, the reason I was there with my camera is that the same butterfly, a few minutes earlier, was spreadeagled across the junction of three green leaves, where it could not go un-noticed.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Panasonic 100 - 400mm Leica DG Vario-Elmar at 400mm 1/1000 at f6.3 ISO 250, hand held.

The stereos are crosseye.

I am not very good at identifying dragonflies but I think this is a male Migrant Hawker. If anyone thinks otherwise I am willing to be corrected.

Ron
A new to me: Moorland/Common/Sedge Hawker Male.

That distinct black T on the face, the lateral yellow stripes on the thorax and the narrow yellow antehumeral (dorsal thorax) stripes clinch it.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Thought it was about time I started posting some photos.

This Dragonfly was taken a couple of weeks ago sitting on our fence in the late afternoon sun, he must have been quite dozy since he let me get the end of the lens (60mm) within 2 or 3 inches of him, usually they fly when you're that close.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Cluster Fly Pollenia sp, probably rudis

I found this on a fern on the edge of an area of heathland at Padworth Common Nature Reserve on 9 September.

Cluster larvae are parasites of earthworms. The golden hairs on the thorax indicate that it emerged recently.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, 1/250 at f10 ISO 1000, hand-held.

Harold

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Hawthorn Shield-bug Acanthosoma haemorrhoidale

I was looking for fungi and slime moulds and lifted this piece rotting Silver birch wood and found, to my surprise, this predaceous bug upside down on the underside.

It was the chilliest afternoon for some time and the insect seemed to cold to move much. However, I put it in the sun to photograph it and eventually it took a step or two. I then took it back to where I found it.

The pale bark is distracting so I have cropped much of it out.

Olympus EM-1, (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, f10 ISO 250, hand-held.

Stereos will be posted tomorrow.

Harold
