Raptors on the wing

Met up with some friends and camera kit at the Flowerpot Pub, Henley at 07.00am missing my bed ...

Well worth the early start and requesting Chicken Wings from my butcher on Saturday

1. It is difficult to precisely focus on the "eye" - as these birds fly at quite a speed, being large helps some

2. We threw up, some chicken wings in the air to entice them ...

3. some looked as if they were going to attack us and eat us

4. some of these birds have young now very early

5. I do like to see them in the wild HERE (rather than a sanctuary)

6. This one is entering a "dive" and about to pick up from the ground

7. I wonder if this is a juv ? it has a lot of white underneath ?

8. This may be my favourite shot today almost hovering

9. eagle eyed

10. not a great shot, but included as it shows the detail in plumage

Most of the time I enjoy just watching these magnificent birds flying ! They fascinate me in the way they use their tail to almost "skid" stop and turn on the wing sometimes I forget to lift the camera and often, forget to push the button

Re: Raptors on the wing

Almost time for bed now then!

You did well to make the early start as we, too, had a great beginning to the day with clear blue skies but by mid morning the clouds had appeared and it is only now clearing again.

We have been in Waltham Abbey for a Mother's Day lunch - we joined our daughter and husband (all of us in Hertfordshire) to meet up with our son and family who live in Kent. We tried to find somewhere (in an area none of us know particularly well) which was a similar drive for both parties and couldn't have done better - 41 mins and 39 mins!

Having deviated somewhat from your post, your pix are excellent - they are all good but I particularly like Nos 2 and 3 heading straight into the camera.

Regards,
Ann1e

WoW "HUGE Thank You's" to you all for your great comments - much appreciated !

I have put one of my 10 best of the day on ... Perfection ... for comments on how to improve it ...

I can HIGHLY Recommend the Flowerpot for a day out ...starting with eta at 7am
There are also Kingsfishers; Swans; Ducks and Grebes on the River Thames banks 200 yds down the lane to the river ! Great place (field by river) for Picnic (we have cooked breakfast (on camping Gas rings) and tea/coffee taking tables and pop up arm chairs GREAT FOR A MEET - easy access !

AND Peacocks male and white female, in another garden nr. the pub and an amazing collection of chickens and crowing Cocks

Re: Raptors on the wing

It's amazing what you can achieve with an alarm clock and a bag of chicken wings. (That's a sentence I never thought I'd ever type!) Well done Chevvy, your dedication and ingenuity have rewarded you with a great set of pictures.

Re: Raptors on the wing

A very well captured set, never thought of using any bait for these - and chicken wings are not the first thing that would have come to mind. This has given me a few ideas to try out!
