Panasonic 100 - 400mm Leica DG Vario-Elmar: Telemacro & Stereo at 400mm

10 Ruddy Darter.

I spent quite a long time with this individual, Sympetrum sanguineum, who was clearly patrolling his territory. He was in superb condition.

Shots of perching dragonflies usually have twiggy bits of dead wood or stems of emergent vegetation in the background. These tend to give moderate highlights in the image and various degrees of cropping are required to minimise these. I have done this with the single frames, the originals being present in the stereo pairs.

I was very pleased with the performance of the lens, careful use of the AF having been essential.

The stereos are crosseye.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Panasonic 100 - 400mm Leica DG Vario-Elmar at 400mm at 1/160 to 1/500 and f10 or f11.

Harold

The stereos, best viewed by leaning back a bit.

2) Large Skipper Male Through 400mm

All shots were from about the same position and at 400mm FL. The single frames have been cropped variously, mainly to exclude highlights from pale background twigs, etc.. The first image is at just above the original magnification. The stereos are as cropped by the special software.

I find this species in our garden, always a a lone male. Once more, it was a lone male.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Panasonic 100 - 400mm Leica DG Vario-Elmar at 400mm at f10, f10 &f11.

The stereos are crosseye

Harold

Re: Panasonic 100 - 400mm Leica DG Vario-Elmar: Telemacro & Stereo at 400mm

These shots, unlike the previous ones, are with the lens wide open (f6.3) at 400mm, where it is sharpest. The single frames have had normal cropping.

The stereos are crosseye.

Thanks, Mark.

It was really not quite enough DOF at that angle.

Super images there Harold. Amazingly shallow depth of field even at f/10! Then again, even at that aperture diffraction softening seems pretty minimal at this scale of reproduction.

Thanks, Ian.

Even in macro, I don't find diffraction blur significant at wider than f16 (on lens, not "effective"). Where it is a problem I adjust micro contrast.

Thanks. Having paid a lot for it I decided I had better use it more!

However, I'm not too keen on the telephoto perspective, preferring no more than 100mm for most subjects and preferably with a lighter lens. The only prolonged sessions with just this lens have been with dragonflies and damselflies where I can't get close.
