Walkabout Creek Hotel

While driving around the western parts of Queensland in September 2019, I just had to pay a visit to the Walkabout Creek Hotel (of Crocodile Dundee fame), where I unrolled my swag out the back and spent the night. A few too many beers followed.....

All these photos were taken with an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk II using a 12-100mm f/4 IS PRO lens.

When travelling the roads of outback western Queensland, you have to compete with road trains such as this one (Type 2 Road Train - AAB Quad), which came thundering past the Walkabout Creek Hotel as I was taking photos.

The Walkabout Creek Hotel in the harsh late afternoon sunlight.

View from the verandah

Opportunity for a "selfie" in the pub.

Inside the pub. Look at the sign above the billiards table. If you're wondering about that lack of patrons, the invasion starts at about sunset.

Walkabout Creek Hotel in the pre-dawn light.

Not long before the sun.....

And the sun has risen.

Not sure I’d want to parallel park a “Type 2 road train”

Re: Walkabout Creek Hotel

Nice shots but it looks a bit like a Ghost Town Larry. Hope it gets busy enough at the Sundown the rush hour to be commercially viable.

Not quite a ghost town yet. - If you look at the view from the verandah, you'll see some houses on the other side of the road (Landsborough Highway). There is also a servo (fuel station) next to the hotel.

I went through two ghost towns during my trip. Look at my post on Betoota (https://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51390).

I also paid a visit to the old uranium mining ghost town of Mary Kathleen, but I haven't posted those photos yet.

A great set of images, Larry, crystal clear, wonderful comps, but not a soul to be seen. I'm reminded of Slim Dusty's song, "But there's-a nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear, Than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer ...

Re: Walkabout Creek Hotel

Nicely done Larry. It looks like a worthwhile 'watering hole' for passing traffic.

It is indeed still trading. The "crowds" arrive fairly late in the afternoon when travellers have parked their caravans, pitched their tents or unrolled their swags in the campsite behind the hotel and come through to th pub for drinks and / or dinner. It can get quite festive and noisy.

If I had been passing earlier, I would have pulled in and had a quick cold beer.

Oh yes! There was definitely quite a bit of beer (and some other stuff too) in that pub. No chance of going thirsty.

If you're really looking for a bit of excitement, try overtaking one of those combinations.

A desolate place but well situated for a nice pint.
