The Secretive Eastern Whipbird revealed.

A pair of (Australian) Eastern Whipbirds (Psophodes olivaceus) were active in front of our house this morning but one got too inquisitive & ended up being entrapped under a light flower pot in a tight place. The dogs were barking at all the rattling going on, so I went with camera in hand to investigate & got these photos after releasing it. This is a great chance of photos as they usually flit around amidst the bushes most of the time & are hard to see let alone actually getting a photograph of them.

After flying off after their mate this one landed on this log further away & hence a cropped photo.

All with E-M1 II & MC20+40-150 F2.8 lens.

Nice shots. It is very similar looking to the Bulbul.

Thanks. I did check a little before lifting the pot off that fell on it to make sure it was a bird & not a rat (thankfully they are under control for now) & then I wanted to know if it was a feral bird or not by taking hold of it carefully & was so delighted to discover it was the native whipbird as they are usually not easy to see for long enough to get a photo. I had the MC20 plus 40-150 lens on so couldn't get a photo of it in my hand so I let it go but thankfully the pair hung around enough for me to get these shots (plus some less wonderful ones).

Thanks. Yes, there is a similarity with them having a crest & also not too different in size too. We also have them (another feral bird) in urban areas being brought here by the early British to have something from home.

I haven't seen those before, how cute are they! Nice pictures, Ross.

Thanks John. I'm glad I could show a bird not commonly seen, mainly because they aren't easy to see quite often, except as they fleetingly jump about in the bushes.
