Ross what's your opinion of this lens? I am in the process of selling my entire good glass Pentax collection, so might invest

It's a useful all round lens that does macro (not 1:1 though), video with power zoom or manual zoom, all internal. It takes nice wide angle shots but gets a bit soft at 50mm & a bit dark for indoor shots (without flash).

I took all these shots around Sydney with it & it performed well for that (on my E-M1 & processed in Capture One).

For lower light shots I now use the 12-60 SWD lens instead (in fact, most of the time now). The last time I saw off one of my family at the airport I used to use the Stylus 1 until one of my daughters has taken possession of it & I used the 12-50 & 40-150 kit lenses on the E-M1 which fitted into a reasonably smallish camera bag (Kata DC-439 DL).

If you want better than the 12-50 lens then the other option (from Olympus) is the 12-40 Pro lens or the 4/3's (with MMF-3 adapter) 12-60 SWD lens. Of course, the new 12-100 F4 lens would be rather nice though, but not cheap.

I hope that helps.

Re: FW Update 12-50mm lens to Version 1.4

The 12-50 is a good lightweight lens. I won't say "little" as its quite long.

As most of us have registered our cameras and lenses on the Olympus site why do we not get sent emails with these upgrade details?

Re: FW Update 12-50mm lens to Version 1.4

Ross - Thanks for that. Like the pics but obviously difficult to tell the true quality of the lens given the PP (Not knocking). Seem to be going for silly low money on ebay. I do suffer from GTBTL - have just ordered a new 75mm at a very good price (if it turns up). I don't have an adapter so the SWD would not do.
Thanks again.

Has the 12-50 gone out of production?

Re: FW Update 12-50mm lens to Version 1.4

My main carry around lens was the 12-50mm, before I bought the 12-40 Pro.

I did a comparison between the two, and at my level of expertise, it was difficult to tell the two apart on a sunny day.

The Pro 12-40 obviously is a much faster lens. I have kept the 12-50mm as it has the macro ability. But I have not used it since I bought the Pro...

Re: FW Update 12-50mm lens to Version 1.4

I have also bought the 12-40 Pro lens last Boxing Day since my 12-60 SWD lens got its aperture blades stuck, but I will still keep the 12-50, particularly if doing video (in bright enough conditions) with its variable speed power zoom, although I can see it will be sitting in the bag most of the time now.

Downunder it is still available as a lens or in the E-M5 Mk II kit.

Don't think so. I have it and it's a versatile lens. However, I also have the 12-40 which is much nicer. Occasionally I consider selling the 12-50 but then decide it's a better size on my Pen F.

You're right. Olympus list it as current, here: https://www.olympus.co.uk/site/en/c/...3ez/index.html

But oddly, this site (which is usually good) suggests it's a discontinued model: http://www.four-thirds.org/en/microf....html#c=FINISH
