I was extremely interested in what you had to offer - but i am afraid it begins to smell of 'caveat emptor' to me.

I for one will not be making any offer on this kit.

If other members of the forum are offended by my stance then I apologise to them unreservedly.

'Best offers' will result in no offers from me.
No apology needed here. Rules say photos should be posted and prices asked for, this is not an auction site.

Re: Virtually brand new Olympus gear for sale

It's up to individual members to make their own judgements. I would quite happily buy from forum regulars, and have done so (nice flashgun, Chillimonster).

However, personally I lose interest as soon as I see number of posts "1."
Particularly when they want to avoid Paypal as it faciliates "fraud." Actually, Paypal at least provides some limited protection to buyers - not much, but a bit more than you get when you make a bank transfer then just hope the goods turn up!

I agree with John (Zuiko). If people are stupid enough to buy from people with 1 post, then let them get on with it!

I'd be interested to here the views of 'The Powers That Be' on this, and other similar threads of late

Re: Virtually brand new Olympus gear for sale

I'm with Zuiko and EH1 on this. I've bought several items from established forum members and have been very satisfied. You can get some idea of a member's integrity from the nature of his/her posts over time and you may get to meet them at forum organised events. I wouldn't buy from someone who had only joined in order to sell his kit - that's what eBay is for - especially when PayPal is rubbished in such a way.

Re: Virtually brand new Olympus gear for sale

I suppose the difference with this one (pricing aside) is that they were willing to meet the buyer. If they're willing to meet, the chances of fraud are less. - not that I'm buying, but the thought is there.

On a work related forum I visit, the powers that be limit the new (less than 10 posts or less than one month) from being able to send/receive PMs and post links, including email addresses. Maybe something similar could work here.

Re: Virtually brand new Olympus gear for sale

it is a shame that the original poster's thread has been turned into a slightly unfriendly discussion about first time posters and how for sale threads should be worded and several other tangents as well. these matters seem to need a bit of sorting out but could we open a discussion elsewhere and leave victorh to sell or not sell his gear. by the way I would be interested in the 12-60 but i live in Ireland so the / exchange complication makes paypal by far the most convenient way to pay for purchases from other forum menbers. if you are willing to split up the kit and rethink the paypal issue PM me with the price including shipping. all the best, hope you do well with the sale of your gear

Re: Virtually brand new Olympus gear for sale

People are entitled to thier views, just as I accept your view. The basis of the forum is/should be openess, fairness and the knowledge that you dealing with like mined people. I myself have purchased several items from sellers here on the forum and being extremely pleased.

What I said was that sellers should not come on the site sellling their goods as if it is a bidding auction, which let's face it, this is what the seller had in mind.

If you choose to advertise your item for a certain amount, and a buyer offers you the advertised amount or makes you a lesser amount and you then accept, that to me is the matter between buyer and seller. To come on the forum and say 'Offers to my email address' is quite clealy something else.

If you think that my original mail was off hand in any way,I think you are mistaken - and clearly other forum members felt the same.

Witch hunts I don't do - Sharp practice I never tolerate, hence my first respone to the seller.

Re: Virtually brand new Olympus gear for sale

I know I'm a newbie here but on the horological forums I frequent, to counter this kind of thing members must have a certain number of posts to use the sales and P.M system and must state a price. We found sellers would sign up just to have a free sales outlet with out contributing to the other forums. Not really the idea of a forum IMO

Re: Virtually brand new Olympus gear for sale

I think pricing over 'offers' is the key Mike, but having quickly glanced through the top page of the forum it seems that a huge proportion of the body/lens posts started off as 'offers', from new and old posters alike.

Given that the rules already cover that, it's an implementation rather than new rules that's required.

Any rule regarding post numbers is counter productive as you will simply get that number of posts appearing in one go!

This one seems to have been the proverbial 'straw', although there were other factors.

Re: Virtually brand new Olympus gear for sale

JackBenedict, I didn't think your post was off hand, or anyone else's either for that matter, they were all valid points but put together it just sounded like the collective "we" were rounding on him a bit, which I don't think is what "we' intended

Yes, nothing like a bit off "speed posting" to get the count up and the quality down

To a degree it's self policing as not many people will send may be hundreds of Pounds off to a "stranger" on a forum with out some kind of "history" of posts.

Re: Virtually brand new Olympus gear for sale

possibly - although I met one (of those posting) at a motoway service station 2 weeks ago and handed over 1000...........

people have to make up their own minds on these things - but having choices and options has to be the starting point

I don't know victorh but I've also recommended that people come here to either buy or sell equipment. We always lay claim to being a very friendly forum, but what's happened in this thread isn't very encouraging for anybody who might be either lurking or browsing.

I've been using internet forums for absolutely ages, and I know how easy it is for people to pretend to be something they aren't, or to post just enough to qualify for some rule or other - which ends up making the rules meaningless.

Up at the front of this folder it says this :-
Quote:
Advertise items you no longer need, as well as interest in items you are looking for. Non-commercial small-ads only. Buyers please take maximum precautions as we can offer no protection from fraudsters.
I know registering here doesn't take long, but at least it shows some effort. People drop in, say "hello", never to be seen again, what's the real difference between that and somebody arriving here to sell their gear?

It might be irritating to see somebody to drop in, offer stuff for sale and then vanish again, but surely we all benefit from that because we get first call, instead of having to browse through auctions and/or other forums where camera equipment is for sale?

Is there any real need to be nasty and who, actually, has been hurt by victorh offering their gear for sale here?
