Looking for a Gimbal head

I was wondering if any body is using a gimbal to fit a manfrotto tripod
I have looked on E bay they have a manfrotto 393 gimbal head the reviews are very good but I am not satisfied if this is the one for me. I would appreciate any advice. Regards John.

Re: Looking for a Gimbal head

I have used this and its very well made and suprisingly smooth and robust.

A lot depends on what lens you want to use on it of course.

They show it used with the swinging yoke uppermost but I found it easy and more stable using it in the down position

Re: Looking for a Gimbal head

I think you will find its fine for those. I used it with a Tamron 200-500 on my 7D and it worked well. Its lighter than some of the more high spec gimbals (which seem to weigh a ton when carting the tripod, gimbal + lens about any distance ). Works well off a monopod too

Re: Looking for a Gimbal head

I would re-iterate what Brian said. I use my head with my Zuiko 300mm f2.8 and it is excelent. I also find it easier to use in the 'down' position.

Re: Looking for a Gimbal head

Looks a though the 144 will take ball heads and plate heads, so you should be ok. You may have to buy a fitting plate to convert, depends what comes with the 393.

Re: Looking for a Gimbal head

The 144 will have a 3/8" stud. The gimbal head should have a 3/8" socket. Manfrotto tripods have 3 grub screws under the platform on the centre column. These need to be loosened before heads can be swapped.
