Black-winged Currawong

The Currawongs are a family of Australian Forest Birds. Hard to get close to, I was lucky with this shot as the bird landed in a South Australian Eucalypt just as a patch of sunshine broke through at dusk.

Re: Black-winged Currawong

Nice capture - heaps of them here but as you say they don't sit still long enough to get a good pic.

Excellent.

No I know what one of those looks like Sounds as though they are not easy to get a decent photo of.

Re: Black-winged Currawong

Nice image. I don't know where it got it's name from as there is more that's black than the wings. Perhaps it should have been "White-vented (a**ed) Currawong"

Re: Black-winged Currawong

That's a nice capture of the Currawong. I know what you mean by not being able to get close as I was trying to get shots of a couple of Common Bronzewing Pigeons in our yard today & eventually I was too close for them & they flew off. I have to sort through the photos to see if there are any good ones for posting.

I like your nomenclature David!
The naming of bird species has long been a mystery to me!
Since taking this shot I have learned that this particular one is part of the "Pied"
Currawong race, but as it hasn't the white wing patches they decided to identify it by calling it the "Black-winged". There is one in Tasmania simply called "Black".
This one is special as it is only found in the Adelaide Hills, where I live.

Hi Ross - I have been trying to get a photo of a Bronzewing with the sun on it's wings for ages! Have plenty of photos, but not THE one I want.

A beautiful shot there Lyn, nice light, good exposure, have no idea as to how I missed it ... love the bokeh of the 70-300. Wish I still had mine.
