"Arijarba"

Or Harwich Harbour in the "Queen's English".

We managed to get out for a while this afternoon for a very chilly visit to Harwich and I managed to get a few shots.

LV18 the last manned Lightship which is now preseved to record the service of these ships and those who served on them. The Mi Amigo logo and the green bicycle etc. are the result of an event last summer to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of "Pirate" radio. For three days there was a small transmitter on board broadcasting "fifties" music.

Looking across the haven to The Port of Felixstowe, the UK's busiest container port. 40% of all UK container trade comes through Felixtowe so there's probably a few Olympus cameras in one of those boxes
.

The local fishermen seem to "aquire" their fish boxes from all over.

A few rays of sunshine.

The structure in the centre of the shot is the hoist for the "linkspan" of the former train ferry terminal which allowed the shore rails to be aligned with those on the ships. The train ferry service from Harwich to Zeebrugge operated from 1922 to 1981. The building on the left is the operations HQ of the Trinity House depot which is responsible for maintaining all the buoys, light floats and other navigation aids around our coast.

The Merchant Navy memorial.

One of the local fishing boats.

THV "Alert". One of the fleet of Trinity House vessels based at Harwich for bouy maintenance.

Thanks for looking.

Very nice Peter. I like the idea of lots of Olympus equipment coming in to the UK.

Thanks.

Just think how much kit a single container can hold.

Many thanks Keith.

The "old town" part of Harwich (which is where the harbour is) is a conservation area and is a fascinating historical and photogenic area. Parkeston Quay (Harwich international Port) on the Essex side of the haven and The Port of Felixstowe on the Suffolk side are very busy and there is always something interesting to see. On January 7th this year the world's largest container ship the China Shipping Container Line "Globe" made its maiden visit to Felixstowe. This ship can carry the equivalent of 19,100 20ft containers.

I posted some other threads on Harwich (in better weather) way back.

Place I have never visited but passed many times, you have sparked my interest now to call in the port.
